VAG 1.8T vs 2.0T fsi?

Looking for a particular car that comes with (amongst others) the Audi 1.8T or the 2.0T fsi petrol engines. I've had one before with the smaller engine and it was fine, has a very good reputation for reliability, and of course would be cheaper. But I always felt it could do with a bit more power, which the bigger engine would give it.

The car I'm looking for will be about 3 years old, and I'm wanting to keep it a good long while.

So play safe,save some cash and get the 1.8, or say the extra for the 2.0?

And are there any problems known about with the 2.0?

Audi A4 Cabrio.

It's for "everyday" car usage.

Be open to either, and buy the best example available for your budget.

Bearing in mind of course that the 2.0T will be worth more, so you may have to consider slightly older/higher mileage for the same money.

I test drove both a few years back and can safely say that the 2.0 lump is the only way to play in the cab. The 1.8T feels underpowered and dare I say it a little tortured as the cab is heavier than the other variants. Its winter so you can apply some good pressure to achieve the price you are after on a 2.0. Happy hunting. Oh and surely Phantom Black is the only colour as it works so well with the silver round the screen etc

That's a beauty! cool

Going to avoid the S-Line though for personal reasons (feel the ride is too harsh and have a thing about tyre noise).

I've run a Cab 1.8T (Sport) before and loved it, but always felt that just a touch more power would be nice, so the 2.0T fsi ought to be perfect.

Just wanted to see whethert there were any known issues that meant giving it a swerve.

True, although I prefer to keep things standard.

Guess there's no horror stories with the 2.0T Fsi then, which is good news.

No horror stories, but I assume that age of A4 is subject to the VAG ABS failure? May just be the Golf/Touran/Leon/Octavia.

Check on HonestJohn for more advice regarding this and whether it affects you. A £350 repair if it does, or £1000 from a dealer.

Is the 2.0 T fsi a six speed? Cool.

Actually, just to really confuse things, I have a line on a perfect spec (for me: Sport, Bose, heated leather, parking sensors, Moro Blue) but with the 2.5 V6 TDI multitronic.

Think that might suit the big lazy cruiser... scratchchin

£350 is cope-able with.

Only drawback I can think of is that the 2.0 requires 98 RON to run in FSI mode for the maximum effeciency. Personally I'd have either of them remapped- providing you go for a conservative map I don't think you'll have any problems- both will go to 230bhp without undue problems. Only weak spot I can think of at that power level is the DV which needs changing for something like a Forge part.

I have a non-turbo 2.0 FSI A4.

Tyre noise is terrible, even though it is softly sprung!

The engine is described by many as having "That FSI Rattle"! It does!

Better have a look at the Audi/VW Forums, as the 2.0T FSI has a history of HPFP cam follower failures.
Although it is a fairly simply DIY to replace it.

Partly, but the design of the suspension has a huge impact on the transference of vibration into the car, as does the sound proofing.

It's not as bad as say a BMW 1 series!

On that new smooth road surface they been using around Surrey, the car just goes quiet!

I know you'll all laugh, but I had a Vectra a while back and it was far better and had lower wind noise as well!

However the steering wheel is well insulated from vibs, unlike that BMW 118 I drove.

having owned both 1.8T 190 quattro and 220(?) 2.0 TFSI Quattro, I can tell you that





its the 2.0T you want, the 1.8T is pap by comparison.
