Scrap car collection questions.

Will soon be scrapping my car, having never done this before id like a few things cleared up for me.

Firstly, there are some very new parts on the car that i would ideally like to keep, one of these being a set of coilovers. Problem being that i dont have all the standard suspension to replace it with.

Are the scrapyard going to expect a "rollable" chassis to be able to get it on the recovery truck etc?

Am i going to be able to expect some money for whats left of the car or will i pay them for collection? or will it just be free?

I doubt they will worry as long as you dont take the piss removing everying, the car will be cubed not long after they get it back to the yard

This outfit will sort it for you. They pick it up for no charge (they get the profit from the scrap value)

Considering they make their money from scrap metal, they may start getting a bit shirty with you over this. I guess it depends on whether they are paying you to take it away. My friend got £150 for his destroyed shogun to be collected and scrapped recently

There was a 5th gear on relatively recently saying that scrapyard people were going to car auctions and could spend about £200 on a car and still make a profit from breaking it up and selling it for scrap, so I wouldn't worry about a couple of coilovers.

take what you can sell , as long as they can get their truck to it to hiab it on its all good , although id explain when calling the suspension /doors are missing so that it will need lifting not towning

could you jam some blocks of wood under the suspension to keep it rolling?

Varies on the outfit. My local scrapyard have 2 lorries they use for collection, one a recovery truck and the other has a crane type affair on the back of it - they thread chains through the windows and lift it on.

They had no problems when I asked them to take a rolling chassis

Are you sure it's not a pikey collecting and taking it???

Should be fine, just let them know, most cars they collect are crashed and don't move very well when the wheel is pushed back into the footwell!!!

What i did was take take off all the saleable parts, then chop the car up with a disk cutter. Then hired a tipper truck for half a day and weighed it in at the scrappy.

I still got £80 for it minus the £25 for the truck plus all the parts id sold off it.

Long as they have a lift arm they dont care. I scrapped a FRST that had no engine, gearbox, driveshafts (so no front wheels) or interior. They turned up and threw it on the back of a lowloader by strapping through the windows and that was that

Haven't the scrapping laws changed. Don't you now need a certificate of disposal, as opposed to just ticking the vehicle has been scrapped on the log book?
Any authorised collection company picking up the car should give you this.

Last year some scrappies picked up my bangernomics 318i that had a bit of an ice/kerb/field incident. It was entirely missing one of its front wheels and all of the front suspension was hanging off, so I doubt they're too fussed about some coilovers.

I regularly buy £50 'spares or repairs' sheds from the local pikey rag, drag them directly to the local pikey scrapyard and make £100+profit.
