Gearbox Dilemma
Discussion
Yes, Haynes covers it.
It will depend on your ability, facilities and affluence how appealing the DIY is, though... £120 would look like a bargain to me, if I had to do it outside or in an unheated garage in these conditions, but then I'm soft and middle aged.
If you're not already doing so (and depending on mileage), consider changing the clutch while you've got the 'box out.

Normally I would suggest that you stop being a scared pansy and tackle the job on your driveway. Gearbox fitment is hardly rocket science.
However, given the weather we are having recently, and your recalcitrent attitude to doing the job which is understandable, I would suggest that you should bite the arm off the guys who have offered to do it for £120.
In anyone's book, that's a bit of a bargain, that is. Especially as once you've paid them, you have a bit of comeback if it all falls out of the car 20 miles down the road.

Haynes does cover this quite well.

It's simple. DIY it.
If you get stuck PM me and i'll see if i can help.
You need to remove the battery, to get at one of the mounts. The other mount is at the aft end of the box, onto the chassis, nearside.
The box is held on with 8 or so allen headed bolts, 8mm allen key needed i think.
Can't remember the size, but you may need to get a set of allen sockets, if they haven't been off before these bolts are usually B...dy tight & allen keys often bend
There is an earth bolted on to the back of the box, that you have to take off.
Obviously, you'll need to crack the hub nuts to get the shafts out, and there is an intermediate support on the offside shaft that you need to loosen off.
Hardest part is lifting the new box back up into place to line it up, they're a bit heavy. If you know anyone that has an engine crane, borrow it, makes it a lot easier.
[b]Make a couple of threaded studs up & screw them into the block at the top in place of the bellhousing bolts. Still a bit of wrestling match but once you've got the gearbox onto these it all slides together much easier. Once fitted remove studs & refit the bolt[/i]
Oh, and don't forget to stick a block of wood and a jack under the engine when you undo the mounts, there are only 3 mounts holding the engine and box to the car, and you're going to undo 2 of them.
Can't think of anything else, it's really fairly easy, an afternoons work.

£120 is just for the fitting, about 3-4 hours labour i presume?
Tis a lot of money to an 18 year old!
Oh and you can't get Haynes manuals off google, not for a Saxo anyway
Can't you Google how to fit though?Tis a lot of money to an 18 year old!

I would take information from both the owners club and Haynes to be honest. The former will give you more real life situation info I would imagine and mention any possible problems encountered in difficult conditions, restricted space etc.
Remember Haynes cars are pretty much brand new, hence no seized bolts, no dirt/oil build up etc. etc. and they've got a fully equipped workshop to play in.
