Driving down a well gritted road today, I'm doing 30 in a 30mph area but then the road starts to get slippery and the back end of my BMW is started to feel a little less planted so I ease off the accelerator down to 20mph. The guy in the 4x4 behind me starts flashing me and giving me the coffee beans in my rear view mirror but there is no way I'm going any quicker so I indicate and pull over to let this guy pass.

He guns it as he goes past and dissapears into the distance. 2 minutes later I see the hazards on and he's side swiped a lampost as he's lost it at the bottom of a hill.

I pull over and his missus is giving him grief for driving too fast. Looking at his Disco, the front wheel is clearly not going anywhere so I offer to give him and his family a lift to the local McDonalds where they can at least keep warm.

On the way there he's telling me "I just didn't expect a 4x4 to lose it like that".

I have to say, you clearly are a true old old school gentleman...

Under normal circumstances I would have done the same, but if he'd been flashing his lights at me, he'd have been walking to McDonalds

I would have given the wife and kids, he could have walked, what a cock, insulted you for being cautious, binned his car and now we all get to pay for his carelessness and stupidy via our insurance premiums.

What a saint, I'd have offered him the lift then driven to the woods and kicked him out.

The opposite happened to me earlier today.

Nice fast road near home and some deadhead overtook me then slowed down, thus denying me the twisties coming up.

He then decided I was tailgating him (I wasn't) and stood on the bloody brakes...

Some people WILL be executed when I take over...irked

I'm interested to hear... on the way to McDonalds did you discuss his attitude towards you moments before he lost control?

Very nice of you to give them a lift. I think I'd have offered to his kids/missus, but I'd have told him to shove it.

About 10 years ago, I was driving my old C reg golf down a main road towards Ascot. It had been snowing heavily so I was going carefully.

A guy in some kind of saloon Audi went flying past me after driving right up the rear bumper of my car for 20 seconds or so, and continued to overtake 3 or 4 other cars in front, in the same manner.

I pulled in to get petrol, then carried on, then got stuck in a load of traffic. When I got to the front of the queue, the traffic was caused by people having to slink past the audi, with the large fat guy driver standing next to his car parked mostly inside a lamp post hehe

Fair play for the guy for wanting to make progress, I think the few minutes he tried to save ended up costing a bit...

I've got to admit I'm no saint. The underlying motive to stop was to gloat I'm afraid.

What's better, 2 seconds of going past shouting abuse at him or 10 minutes of him telling me what an idiot he's been with his wife telling me she's so grateful for me stopping!!

This was near Preston in Lancashire.

Yes, McDonalds on a Sunday afternoon was hell on earth!!

No, I never mentioned it but it was funny when his lad said to him in a loud whisper "isn't this that wkers BMW". I think he wanted the ground to open up.

Anyway, the point of the post really is - even a 4x4 won't keep you out of trouble in these conditions.
