Some Chattertrap Audi blokey just started following me on Twitter (god knows why?!), seems they had something juicy-ish on a forthcoming RS7 complete with an estimated 600bhp 4.0 Bi-Turbo v8 powerplant! Now this is something I'm liking the sound of! Will be very interested to see how it compares to Mercs next AMG CLS, which I'm guessing will follow suit with the rest of the bunch and take on the new twin-turbo 5.5 unit...

egmCarTech - Audi RS7 Coming 2011

Motorward - Audi RS7 to get 600 horsepower?

600bhp 4.0Bi-Turbo sounds tasty at least, no?

Sounds nice Tom, but here's an idea: Why don't they build some performance cars that are more affordable to Average Joe? I must say that you do start to lose interest in the nth special edition £100k supercar or some other mental saloon that you're never going to own. The real engineering challenge for them would be to build something fun with a price ceiling of £30k.readit

£30k is bugger all these days, an Impreza WRX STi is nearly £33k.

yes but point being price relative to what people can afford, not relative to what other cars sell at - being as the new car market is the biggest cartel in existence.

Precisely. However, "fun" cars under £30k are possible - for examples see the Lotus Elise, Mazda MX-5, Mazda RX-8 & Nissan 370Z. None of these are based on run-of-the-mill family cars and all use RWD drivetrains. The 370Z in particular is a bargain IMO and taking value for money into account, must be one of the very best cars currently on sale in the UK market.

I could agree more. I'm totally fed up with these Uber machines. Get into the real world. I've owed some nice machines in the past...Ur Quattro being one of them. A lot of today's machines seem irrelevant.

Er... Audi don't have a market, they want to sell to everyone and anyone. Hence the A3 1.8, the Q7 V12, S8, RS6, A7 etc etc.

I think that means that Audi have lots of markets. You certainly see enough of the things on the road, so they must be doing something right.

Of course they have a market, they're a premium car manufacturer that produces all types of vehicle for the affluent or aspirational customer. All of the major manufacturers produce vehicles of all types, segmenting their market with their quality, and hence pricing.

As for the £30k far that's fun, doesn't the upcoming S1 (RS1?) address this?

Besides, a hotted-up supermini (especially one that, if the standard cars' dynamics are anything to go by will likely disappoint) is hardly an alternative to something like a 370Z. The nearest thing is probably the TT 2.0T, which could be fun if Audi put it on a diet / gave it a remap to improve the power/weight ratio. - This wouldn't cost them a lot to do so it could feasibly be a sub-£30k car.
