Why are my lights flickering?

My Ford Transit Connect seems to have a voltage instability, all the lights, dashboard lights etc flicker very slightly. Will it be an alternator fault?

Increasing the revs doesn't really help, it's a diesel BTW.

I'd like to get an idea what's broken before I ask the garage to repair it.

Any advice would be appreciated.
