Seeing loads of cars broken down at the side of the road at the moment. Not crashed and not non starters sat on a driveway. Presumably the influx has to be due to the cold and snow but I'm just wondering what actually 'goes' halfway through a journey because of the cold?!?

One otherthing, there has been talk of driving with snow on the car. An even bigger hazard are those huge lumps of ice forming on the wheel arches! One dropped off the car in front on the motorway - it was like a cannon ball flying towards me!

-20 air temp + windchill + old knackered coolant = frozen rad.
-20 air temp + heaters/lights + old knackered battery = dead car.

Heard an AA bloke on the radio last night saying `some people have been ringing up saying their windscreen washer fluid has frozen up` and `only call us if it is absolutely necessary` i.e. not for that reason. rolleyes

It always amazes me how many people never check their cars at any time, never mind in arctic conditions.

So many idiots around.....it's frightening!

Iirc , flat tyres from hitting curbs , drained battery and being stuck it's what most if the extra callouts are in winter

Too many folks dont give a st about their motors between MOT or service.....

IF we had Winter tyres and a changeover schedule....then this would mainly be avoided as you would check yer motor so it is fit for the winter ...One BIG issue for many is labour costs and being ripped off...by the trade & halfrauds...
People could do a lot more for themselves but choose not to as they have been "dumbed" down to think that to pay halfrauds £2.50 each bulb change and wiper blade change with inflated parts prices is acceptable to some and unacceptable to others ......hence the poor self Maintenance.... Now if folks went to Trade counters they would save a packet, just a bit of re-education.....I guess I could make a fortune in Tesco/Sainsbury etc with Bulb/Wiper etc replacement out of a van...with the amount of motors with headlamps out & crap wiper blades....

This it is cold enough and dark enough out there most of the day that I am willing to bet a lot of older cars are drawing more from the battery than the alternator is putting back so eventually something has to give be it starting on a cold day or staying running in slow traffic.

I have had 2 "non enthusiast" friends have rads blow up, I have since seen both cars and both had had the same coolant since they were built or bought and neither of them had bothered to check their fluids in this weather, annoys me that they don't consider these things.

It's from people not servicing and/or checking their cars.

For example, I can't ever recall seeing any of my neighbours with their bonnets up checking/topping up fluids or checking their tyre condition/tyre pressures.

There's me on the other hand who does the usual checks most weeks and I service my car as per schedule. Surprise surprise, I never break down.

Some people don't deserve the opportunity to own a car.

Is the rolling eyes face aimed at the AA mans comments or the people?

Isn't this why Renault cleverly designed the Clio with a bonnet catch that would automatically release (often whilst moving). It gave numpties the perfect opportunity to actually look under the bonnet for a change wink

As well as all the above I've heard several reports in the last few days of traffic probs caused by car fires of all things!

How come when it's snowing/freezing etc do cars catch on fire?!

How do you know they're not abandoned as opposed to broken down??

I'm not saying you're wrong - just curious as to how you know.

Cheers

Easy, side of motorway, hazard lights flashing away with the driver staring at an open bonnet with a mobile in their hand.
Seen x4 today.
