Why Do 4x4 Drivers Feel The Need To Show Off?
Discussion
Was wondering why 4x4 drivers feel the need to use a snow/slush covered motorway lane when there are two perfectly snow free lanes?
Typical example this morning, was doing 65-70 in lane two following the traffic, and had 4x4's behind me attempting to pass in lane three of a busy motorway and not making any real progress.
I look in the mirrors and they have dropped back as they brick it and realise they can't, or don't have the guts to go faster on a fully snow/slush covered road as the 2WD vehicles on much clearer tarmac.
By the way, I do have winter tyres on my FWD car, but I don't feel the need to show I'm invincible.

Saw one yesterday (L200) complete with company name all down the side of it (idiot clue no.1) floor it away from traffic lights, fishtailing in the slush as he did so and splashing a woman on the adjacent footpath quite badly. It is a built up area and he was only going 100 yds until he had to slow for a mini-roundabout. Womans fella was seething (we ended up in the same shop) and threatening to have him reported.
There was absolutely no need for that drivers behaviour and did seem to be showing off. Idiot.

I know it's an offence to deliberately drive through a puddle and soak a passer-by, but obviously this wasn't quite the case.
I think it was more a case of the vehicle belonging to a small local business. The guy in the shop may have recognised it/the driver.
I heard him mutter "I could f##k him up!"

4x4 drivers have not been my problem this winter, its been OCD's (Over Critical Drivers). You know the ones that flash their lights erratically if you are anything less than 15 car lengths in front when you indicate and pull out to overtake? Or the ones that do 30 on a completely clear motorway in winter then flash their lights erratically if you overtake as they think you are driving dangerously. Then there are the ones that say "my brakes wouldn't work on snow"...WTF?

Just saw an L200 driving up the hill past my house. Rear wheels spinning like crazy and back end wagging like a Labrador's tail.
Either showing off or not realising that his truck isn't 4wd unless he engages part time 4*4. Bit of a tool either way.
Based on the info you've given, calling him a tool is a little harsh - have you never given it too much beans and had the back end 'wagging like a Labrador's tail'??Either showing off or not realising that his truck isn't 4wd unless he engages part time 4*4. Bit of a tool either way.
I know I have - puts a smile on my face!!

I spent the last couple of days driving through the slushy stuff wherever possible, because I had the snow chains on. About 80% of the roads round here hadn't been gritted, so I had to find the slushy bits on the other 20%.
Have spent the last three days ferrying around staff morning and night because there's been no buses running. At our busiest time of year too.

Even with all the snow/ice, I've only found one hill I've actually needed to engage 4wd on to get up. I've therefore spent the rest of the time hanging the tail out (when safe to do so Either showing off or not realising that his truck isn't 4wd unless he engages part time 4*4. It's called increased braking distance.Gassing Station | General Gassing [Archive] | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
