Driving to work this morning and something hit me on my foot. I pulled over and picked up this:

The two part seem to fit together. Any ideas what this it, and am I safe to drive home and / or to a garage to get it sorted? It's an '04 plate Renault Scenic.

How big is this something?

Did it fall out from under the dashboard?

Difficult to get an idea of the scale from the picture, but if it hit you on the foot I'd guess it's a spring off one of the pedals or maybe part of the collapsible steering column?

Did it happen to punch a massive hole in your floor while the car simultaneously sagged on one side?

Looks like the return spring for one of the pedals.

I can't tell the size of that part, but does your clutch and/or brakes still work? It doesn't look too unlike a brake master cylinder push rod, but as you didn't slam straight into the car in front I'm guessing it isn't. biggrin

Throttle mechanism? heater mechanism?

I've currently got a Megane Expression (or whatever the estate version is called) - truly, horrible, horrible car. Falls to pieces around you. Doors and windows operate or don't operate at random. heater is blowing cold air on the feet due to a broken mechanism. I shall never own a Renault again, truly dreadful.

The only reason I've got it is because the previous owner gave up on it due to the crank pulley falling off after it had had the cam belt changed. The engine (1.5dci) has no timing marks and no keyways on the cam or crankshafts.

Horrible car.

Sorry, should have been clearer. It hit the top of my foot so I'm guessing it fell from the pedals / under the steering column.

9cm long when the two part are assembled. Yes, I think if fell from under the dash.

Something breaks near the pedals, and steering and you ask if it's ok... do your pedals return? is your steering still ok?

Differnt car - however it looks like the same kind of thing, in the same kind of place, this is apparantly ROD A, and ROD B, and a Turnover spring *shrugs* dont know if that helps of not.

EDIT - This is the clutch assembly. So i guess the question is... Is there any spring in the clutch when you push it down?

It's your clutch over centre spring.

Looks very much like a clutch pedal "over center" spring. Have you noticed the clutch pedal being harder to hold down?

All pedals seem to be working fine.

I agree about Renaults. I've got a collection of bits and pieces in the glove box that have dropped off over the last 5 years. Central locking is currently knackered, one door won't open at all, and one window won't open or close.

Is it bad that upon reading the title my first thought was 'French Car', and my second thought was 'probably a Renault'?

Pedals and steering feel absolutely normal.

Looks similar to parts 5 and 7. Clutch pedal feels absolutely normal.
