As an amateur musician I'm now playing bass and double bass (well, electric upright) more often, and my kit won't fit in my Maserati. I'm debating whether to spend £600 ish on a smaller amp which would go in the boot, leaving the bass on the back seat, or trading for a fast, comfy and slightly posh estate or 4x4.

I'd quite like 4WD as we do quite a few gigs over the winter and can travel some distance, and while we've never been stuck due to the weather it's come close a few times. Also, although living inside the M25 our local roads are not gritted and rapidly become an ice rink - the Maserati can't move at all, since as soon as the clutch engages it sits there spinning its wheels. Maybe winter tyres would help, but I haven't got space to store spare wheels, nor could I afford them on top of regular maintenance and tyres.

To keep the luxury feel, must have leather, heated seats, power seats, and not feel cheap.

So, if I were to replace the GranSport, I could go for something like:

Audi RS4 Avant, probably 2001 ish at about £15K
Toyota Landcruiser, maybe 2004 at £12.5K
Porsche Cayenne, 2003/4 at £15K

Any other ideas? Also, how are dealers about part-exing in a trade-down situation? I know selling privately is financially better, but it's the cost to change in the end.

Trading down is going to be like selling your car for cash to the dealer. It will sting but if you want ease of axchange you have to give the dealer a living.

I have a similar issue about once every 3 weeks and I've worked out it is cheaper to hire a car than to run another. I can also claim the car hire back against tax.

WRT to your maser, I would be inclined to say you will be better off selling privately or getting a trade bid from someone specialising in masers - the odds of finding a dealer with the car you want who will take your car at a price that suits all will compromise the whole deal.

Out of your list I would go for the B5 RS4 avant - if you can resolve your car privately your best option will be to sign up with rs246.com and see if you can get a car direct from a current owner rather than through a dealer, putting a want ad on the B5 will probably see you get a much better car as the best examples tend to trade between enthusiasts and not on the open market.

in terms of ownership the B5 will definately give you the same performance as your maser (much more if you mod it), whilst having decent all weather stability (I drove one in a swedish winter), while the chassis of the B5 isnt quite on par with the B7 the performance is actually much more better, the turbo's give it more of a sense of urgency.

Very practiccal amount of loadspace, get one with all the options - leather recaro's, heated seats, sat nav, cruise etc and you get a lot of bang for your buck and the car is likely to be more collectable than the newer B7 due to rarity.

Mr Spock,

I'm a little short on ideas for what to replace the GS with, but if you're thinking about selling, put it up for sale on Maseratiforum.co.uk and Sportsmaserati.co.uk - there's allways people looking for GS's on there so give it a bash first, you never know!

Good luck.

Thanks! Will probably hang on to the GS until the Spring, since it should be easier to sell when the weather's better.

That Subaru looks like outstanding value, less than 9K for a 2006? It was indeed the B5 RS4 I was looking at, I'd like to release some cash from the GS if I can for running costs and so on, so the price looks about right.

Nobody like the Cayenne/Landcruiser option?

I'm biased but am a big fan of the Cayenne.

The weekend before Christmas I had a wedding to go to in Kilmarnock. The BMW 530D I was running couldn't cope with the local roads to me which were snowy and icy so I took a Cayenne S and it was fantastic. The one I had was nicely specced with xenons, heated seats and steering wheel, air suspension etc. Once we got into Scotland we wouldn't have been able to get through to the wedding in anything less, the approach to the venue (the bride's parents house) was up a steep lane which had snow packed hard and then iced over.

On a long run they're very relaxing, nice and squishy ride when switched into Comfort and I've been through some serious snow in them without struggle, even on summer tyres.

The boot has plenty of room for your kit too.

Which? Although I loved my Dad's XJ6 (NRU 392M where are you?) I find the seats of all XJs a bit short in the squab. There's no S-type estate, so that's an X-type Estate then? A bit...um...not me.
