Bought a car tonight, cheap mk2 golf to do up. Its got a few problems and the lass was glad to see it go, she remembered the paperwork after doing the document saying ''oh do you want the mot etc'', ''oh yes please anything you've got would be great'' said I.
She came back with a plastic wallet stuffed full of paper, I could see some old type MOT certificates so was hopefull for a few years history at least.

It turns out that there is a wadge of dealer paperwork stapled together that includes the origonal bill of sale, to say Im chuffed is an understatement! Bought new by a lady, and looks like its had at least 2 lady owners since.

Anyway, looking through I find its had the cambelt done in '04, thats not bad.
In the meantime my Mum is flicking through the dealer paperwork and says ''oh its had the cambelt done, in '98 though'' 2 more flicks and a rather curious ''and again in 2000'' so I have a look and yes, its had the cambelt done 3 times in the space of 6 years, twice by the same dealer in the space of 2 years and still in the ownership of the same person!!
Lucky to get a car thats had it done once.

Is it me or does that go to show that if a garage or even a dealer think they can take someone for a ride they will!
Random but thought it interesting to find, anyone else found out things about their cars in the service history?

Has ir done a high mileage between the belts being changed? If it's a 40k interval and the car was doing 20k a year...

Always nice to see a big wodge of receipts though smile

I found that my 1994 Civic had 5 radiator changes since new! Luckily no problems while I owned it.

First was at 54,983 miles, second at 60,333 and unfortunatly theres no mileage on the recipt for the third one but it was done march 04 and the mot in Jan 05 has 78,956 recorded mileage. I also have another MOT certificat for October '03 that says 77,191

This gem from my Mrs re her car:

"Oh yes, me and ***** (ex Husband) were looking through the owners book and discovered it was ex-rental. I dont think the dealer (main Renault dealer) realised so we got a bargain out of them really."

Girl at work asked me (as resident car nerd) if her car needed a cam belt each time it was now serviced. I was a tad confused so she said the cam belt was done at the previous service but now the dealer was saying it needed doing again so she thought that perhaps once it's been done the first time it needs doing each year after that.

Some dealers will be less than honest, especially with female customers.

Yep, thats what this shows, I know my sister is someone who would probably be taken in by it if she didnt have me or dad to ask.
Cant believe a main dealer has the guts to do it though, to the same owner as well.

Ouch, that dealer was probably grinning ear to ear with those cambelt changes. It's not like they sold her an expensive tyre or something and made a few quid, two bloody cam belts! A female friend recently got a car and us lads now have to go down to the garages with her incase they try to fob her off with something. Bit of a shame that we feel we need to do that.

My BMW 328I with one previous male owner had 4 aircon services in 3 years! All main dealer receipts. When it came to getting the wheel nuts off they might aswell have been welded on, car had not had a proper service in ages. Main dealer bonus hunting mechanics = poor work!

If they're giving the owner the hard sell, you have to wonder was the work actually completed?

Exactly what I though, I wonder how many times it really has been done, the second one probably never happened, it supposedly had a service at the same time which again probably never happened and the poor lady paid out £285.73 for the priviledge.

I bought a Volvo S70 last year for some friends as an urgently need runabout. Some old duffer had owned it from new, 130k miles, every single service it had new pads & dics all round going by the receipts. It was about £700 a set fitted I think.

There were 12 services in the book yikes

That is pure gold! Struggling to get my head round the idea of anyone logically thinking that one through!

When I was looking for a first car I remember leafing through the service book for an old Pug 306 and a condom fell out from inside the pages. It had been opened but not used (I hope!), never found WTF it was doing there.

You say that like it's a good thing. In reality it often means never had the oil, water or tyres checked, been up every kerb in christendom and parts actually have to fall off before they see a garage. . . . . . wink

It's cracking to get a nice history with a car.
My previous car (only previous owner being my mother) had a bulging history when I sold it on (well chopped it in!), including the original order document, delivery docs, the whole works. It's stupid, but nice to have.

Unfortunately my '5 doesn't have anything like as comprehensive set of documents.
I seem to be solving that though! hehe

Yes unfortunatly, though it looks like the first owner, even if she was a bit gullable did love the car to order it new and keep for roughly 10 years and always get the dealer to look after it, its stamped regularly in the book too and history with her goes untill the early 2000's (stamps run out at 60k and its done 90k) though they do seem to have had to replace something every time. Only bonus is that it wont, I hope, have been driven by a boy racer thinking he has a GTI...
