Advice/recommendations on a daily commuter (boring stuff)

Happy Xmas all!!!
I am currently in the market looking for a daily commuter due a change in job that will require me to do daily 60mile return trips =/ My wallet doesnt agree with the mpg on my current 330 so be shifting that to get something a little more practical! Looking at budget of 5-7k and anything above 40/45 mpg would be great! Looking for something that can fit a small family but still with a element of fun !! Hard to please i know =P Ive been mainly looking at the A3 2.0 TDI and the GOLF 2.0 TDI! Ive also considered a Honda jazz cause they are cheap to pick up and seem spacious for what they are but the DSi performance seem very dire when coming from a 330!

Going on the VAG theme, what about a Skoda Fabia VRS or some sort of diesel Seat Ibiza or Leon? Bit more interesting than the A3s and Golfs.
A Focus TDCi? Sure they come with a 130ps engine of some sort, won't be aswell put together as anything VAG, but will most likely be a better driving experience.
