That doesn't look like a failure in anyone's driving technique. In fact the white pick-up seemed to be on AT tyres so I conclude that the hill is steeper than it looks from the video, and they were sitting on ice which gives them no chance at all.
Yep, looks like the snow's sitting on a bed of ice.gareth.e said:
It is indeed, but come on... Did you not see them just lock the brakes and wait to hit whatever object arose?!?!?
I'd like to think I'm pretty good at driving in the snow, I got myself out of some pretty hairy situations in the last few weeks
Easy to be an armchair critic, a bit different when you're in the situation yourself!I'd like to think I'm pretty good at driving in the snow, I got myself out of some pretty hairy situations in the last few weeks

How would you attempt to stop a car that has manage to start sliding all of its own accord?
Watch the video again and note how the vehicles accelerate once the wheels are locked. By keeping the wheels turning in the direction of travel you would at least have a chance of regaining control.SubaruSteve said:

Watch the video again and note how the vehicles accelerate once the wheels are locked. By keeping the wheels turning in the direction of travel you would at least have a chance of regaining control. You cannot stop on a hill/surface like this, but you can steer, backwards is tricky but going down that hill you could steer and miss everything. When all 4 wheels are locked you have zero control and just go where gravity wants you, several of those accidents were avoidable.
