Mate's gonna buy a diesel
Discussion
My mate wants a diesel – VW Passat TDI 110bhp,
probably – cos he's gonna save money on insurance, running costs etc.
What reasons can I give him to get what he REALLY wants, a VR6 Golf? :a bit more
ie apart from 'diesels are crap'
He thinks the savings (above) are going to outweigh the 'thrill' of driving the VR6. Is he right?
I think he's talking bollox ... and that he should get what he wants, as you're a long time dead.

Unless he's doing loadsa miles, get the VR6 - the thrill factor will outweigh anything else (and here's me who drives a diseasal).
Depends whether he's a torque-junkie or a rev-freak tho. Chip upgrades are easily available..... hehehehe

Try and get him to meet you half way with a VW Golf TDI 150bhp. Fuel savings, High speed cruising and performance all in one. 145mph+ , 0-60mph in 7secs!
They might even put this 150bhp TDI unit in the Passat (not sure though).
Er.. Actually its 0-60 in 8.5 secs (just as the 1.8T was).
I drove a 110ch diesel Passat once - hired car - and it was sooooooo boring on the motorway and so heavy on windy road - as Ted puts it you feel you're cornering on the door handle. there's nothing wrong buying diesel now provided you buy a decent one - even a second hand 325tds Beemer / Audi A4 2.5 tdi would be good and reasonably cheap.
Really, it's all down to whether he wants a car o a people carrier.

Good sensible car the Passat TDi. I recently decided to get rid of my Jeep (one less SUV at 16 mpg) to save money and stop Smeagol hating me quite so much - and a diesel saloon was the obvious choice.
Anyway I went down to my local VW dealer to look at a Passat / Jetta TDi and somehow came away with an Audi A4 with a V6 petrol engine

Diesels are cheaper to run than a petrol, but it can be a bit of a false economy. You really do need to do some major mileage to make them pay. I remember some magazine saying that it is something that 20,000 miles a year to see real savings - which is what I do....
Dont forget that diesel is currently more expensive than unleaded. Insurance is cheaper but servicing is more likely to be more expensive as it is more frequent.... Do the maths carefully and see what comes out...
Would recommend that the VW/Audi 2.5TDI is a cracker and the BMW 325TDS is good. Wont mention the 330d as currently far too expensive. However, if the budget doesnt stretch then a 1.9TDi with at least 110 is good.....
Cheers,
Paul
