What Image!? ("No sports car" rule - boohoo)
Discussion
Ok - let's start this one off now. A nice "Which Car" thread!
I may, when I get back off holiday, join a nice little firm which specialises in consultancy in a niche part the Financial Services arena.
Just got off the 'phone to Boss Man who, and I agree with him here, has pointed out that he has a no "sports car" rule. Don't want to turn up at a client's office looking anything other than "the part".
He cited that he drives an Audi (A6) which seems fine and one of the other guys changed recently from Jaguar to Merc and the Merc image was a bit frowned upon by some of the clients!
To me, apart from a TVR, any other car is just a tin top. And one tin top is just like any other. I just want to be able to hop in and pop five minutes up the road or five hours up the motorway without having to think about it too much.
So which is the right one for a "conservative" but business-like image without being too "showy" or "up-market"?
First "gut feeling" is a Saab, although I had overlooked the possibility of an Audi.
What do you experts feel?

OK - you got half of my drift!
I actually agree that it is a good idea to get the right car for the image, it will be important to not look like a flash git or a tramp or a spotty faced oik!
My natural tendancy is to look a bit too much like a greying long-haired Damien Hill driving a Cobra....
.... and I KNOW that's not right!!!

Only one name springs to mind:
Alfa Romeo
That's a good name
(I believe the car's are quite good too!)
A nice understated (conservative AKA "dull and boring") colour might just go on the shortlist!
(Then I just have to sidestep Mrs Beano with a second car - which will be a TVR in an outrageous
colour!)If my financial adviser turned up in something too flash, I'd be wondering if I was paying them too much. By the same standard, I wouldn't want them to turn up in a Rover 214, as it would raise certain questions about their competence.
I think you'll have to go for something like a 5-series or an A6, but there's nothing to stop you from going for a nice fat V8 with some careful de-badging.

Saab 9-5 Aero (250bhp, 0-60 6.5sec) Very good motorway crusier, reasonable fuel economy. Very discreet but very very fast.
My Dad has a 9-5 2.3t Vector (The one down from the Aero) slightly slower than the Aero, but quick none the less. The best bit of driving it is how quickly it goes from 50 to 90mph which makes it an ideal car for overtaking safely.
My dad's car is on a lease and as he was doing too many miles he borrowed a collegues Merc C class. He found that people didn't like the image of it so went back to the Saab. Also it wasn't as well spec'd and it wasn't as comfortable as the Saab.

Personally I tend to judge people on their quality and reputation of their work.
If someone is recommended to me I don't care if they turn up in a Reliant Kitten!
You never know, the guy might be a wizz but like to blow all of his cash in casinos and on lap dancers....
Just me though, I do realise most people take people on face value.

Ron,
I would suggest to the boss that you will only be able to stretch to an old Granada and that would probably not fit the image he is looking for. Therefore you will be needing a nice company Audi RS6 in order to fit the image and to keep you happy.
Alternatively, get in a job in the music business and drive whatever the hell you like (i.e. a Crystal Topaz Cerbera)!
