Italian police get Lamborghinis

Italian police have been given something of a helping hand in their bid to catch crooks.

The latest addition to their fleet of cars is a Lamborghini sports car with a top speed of 192mph.

The 2-seater Lamborghini Gallardo will be used along highways in southern Italy.

The car, a gift from the Italian car factory, uses a V10 cylinder DOHC four valve V90 5 litre, 500 Hp engine.

why sick joke? gets publicity for both sides, If you were the head of the Italian police force and Lambo offered you a Gallardo for free wouldn't you take it?

It's a sick joke because Lambo build and sell fast cars to their customers. Now they are giving the police a free sportscar in which to effectively catch their customers using their products. I would love to be proven wrong with this vehicle not being used for catching speeding motorists.

I also regard my local merc dealer supplying "stealth vans" to the local scamera partnership to be a betrayal of their customers.

I agree with Daz on this one. It's obviously not intended to catch bank robbers/professional villains, etc.

What a load of nonsense. Are Ford/Vauxhall/BMW/Volvo betraying motorists because they make a Police Spec car? Of course not.

We've had it over here. According to public myth, Norfolk Police had a Esprit as a traffic car. It was no such thing. It had no working lights/sirens or equipment. It was a publicity stunt. The car was loaned to them for a number of months, all marked up for promotional/recruiting purposes. If the Police actually used any kind of supercar as a proper patrol vehicle, it would disintegrate inside a month.

Doesn't sound like a promo car to me.

Not nonsense at all. There is a big difference in that Ford/Vauxhall/BMW and Volvo will be paid for supplying their cars. The Italian police force is not paying for this Gallardo. My accusation that the gift is a betrayal to the customers of Lamborghini therefore still stands.

TBH I doubt it. having been stopped for speeding in the south of Italy in a flash car doing about 210kph, they only stopped me cos they wanted a look at the car

more danger they will try and race the customers of Lamborghini than nick them

To be honest, I think using ultra-high performance cars as cop cars is a good idea.

As we all know, a person changes when they get in their car.
On the motorway, you will find yourself judging people in terms of their car, and driving style, hence the 'BMW drivers are wanakers' stereotype.
Even though these people may be quite normal when out of the car.

So what kind of signal does a copper in 5litre 500hp Lambo give out.
I reckon, if introduced to this country, it would bring motorists into line immediately, knowing there was a monster prowling a particular stretch of motorway.

Its the intimidation thing, similar to seeing a 7ft copper walking the streets would make you think twice.

Marvellous. But how long before the euroscumocrats bring an end to quality policing like this.

Well when I saw a then new Porsche 968 with the jam sandwich stripes down the side hidden behind a BP car wash I made a point of going up to the BiB to have a nosey and see if it was for real or not.

The driver said that it had been in operation for 9 weeks and the odometer had registered over 18k miles.

Florida Highway Patrol use various sort of fast cars. The latest is a fleet of Chevrolet Camaros, tuned to the max with the C5 Corvette engine (5.7 litre) dropped in. My neighbor (who is a FHP officer) states that the officers (who ride alone in the cars) have to go through an intensive supplemental driving course before being handed the keys. They're sneaky as well. The lights on the roof are so low profile that you cannot make them out in the mirror when it is behind you...

...Just be careful when you visit Florida.

it would make for a great polica camera action show watching the ploice in there lambo chasing some bank robbers in exactally the same lambo, i cant really see them using it to run another car off the road, that would be one expensive repair bill
