No, you are correct. He was a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, but he had to give it up when he signed for McLaren.Or do I have that wrong?

Hulkenberg always used to be in the frame for the Ferrari drive. Although I like Hulkenberg, I can't think of any particular reason you'd choose him over Perez.
I think I'd like to see Grosjean in the Ferrari most of all

i think that would be a great move. rate him highly. more so than hulkenberg. he should stick to WEC and le mans ;-)
he has hadlike 6 podium finishes in a very mid table car. manages tyres well, very smooth and knows how to handle pressure much better now.
perez is a bit like button in the way he drives and manages tyres plus reads races.
I think he will get a top seat sooner or later. time for button, Alonso and a few of the other seniors to step aside.

One good race and all this crazy speculation? I don't see it personally. I can understand why Ferrari might want to replace Raikkonen but really they should stick with him until a proven winner or 'special' comes along. I'm thinking Ricciardo, Verstappen, Hamilton, Rosberg, etc.
Perez is a solid enough performer but I don't see anything to suggest he is suddenly super fast, in many ways he is similar to the ageing Raikkonen - not that hot in qualifying and a bit of a plodder in the race who will pick up good results if/when things fall his way.... but you never get the impression he is going to make something happen in the same way as a Verstappen or Ricciardo can.
Ferrari rarely seem to take on unproven drivers and given the positive comments from Arrivabene and Sergio Marchionne earlier this year I think they are planning to stick with their current line up for 2017.... unless Raikkonen starts crashing out or falling off the pace again.

The guy is still a liability... one moment he is telling everyone how the car is the best he has ever driven (er, despite driving the race winning Lotus for 2 seasons and getting nowhere near his team mate) and the next moment he is slagging the car & the team off down the radio in public earshot. Yes these last 2.5 years he looks impressive but then look at the benchmarks he has had - Maldonado and Gutiérrez. Put him in the Ferrari pressure cooker alongside Vettel and he would have a meltdown within half a dozen races.
