Why does it start in the 1950s?

We've had pit stops since before World War 1.

I would disagree. In the 1920s, we had "The IT Girl" (Clara Bow) - and very pretty she was too -

Interesting nd at the same time, disappointing. It was a shame they had to jump straight to 1982, thus dismissing 70% of motor racing history in about ten minutes.

Still, at least I now know who to blame for today's pitstop-heavy culture.
