All cars given one set of the same tyres and filled with the same amount of fuel.

All have 60 minutes in which to complete 20 or so consecutive laps; the time counting towards grid position being the average across those 20 laps.

If it starts to rain - the timing stops while tyres are changed.

If someone bins it requiring marshal intervention - timing stops - VSC until cleared - and off they go again

If someone spins it and there's yellows - tough.

For the most part, I wouldn't imagine the natural order of things to change much but we'd get all cars going for it over a longer period of time and easy for one small error to drop a driver quite a way down the grid to shake the order up a bit.

What problem are you looking to solve?

I ask as I quite enjoy qualifying at the moment.

Make F1 more interesting.

Points for qualifying.

Reverse the grid.

There would be plenty of overtaking biggrin

Filling the tyres with fuel could be a tad dangerous.

There's nothing wrong with the current qualifying format.

Surely this would result in less overtaking as the competitors will be neatly sorted in order of race pace, rather than the current qualifying pace vs. race pace complication.

I remember when qualifying was over two days, Friday and Saturday. All cars out all the time, fastest lap is pole.

Fastest lap could happen anytime depending on weather and traffic.

Current method is much better to watch, often better than the race.

Out of all the things to change in F1, I don`t think qualifying is one of them. frown

In that case, why change the format?

No, they'd all manage the tyres in order to complete the twenty laps in as short a time as possible.

Not really - they'd have another n laps to try to recover, rather than now where if you muff it up, you are generally punished quite hard (cf. Hamilton in Brazil)

Not sure what problem you're trying to solve by effectively having a sprint race to decide the feature race grid.

Also qualifying is the only time we get to see the cars on minimal fuel, new tyres, maximum engine mode etc. I’m surprised how often we hear drivers saying that qualifying laps are their favourite of the weekend because of this.

Current quali is generally fine.

One idea would be to see the tyres rule adapted to provide sets of ultra sticky quali tyres (good for 2 laps) to all runners. Separate race and quali tyres. But I'm not that bothered, it's a pretty good at the moment.

They should have a complete reverse grid, which would make for really entertaining racing; except of course on those tracks where overtaking is extremely limited smile

How would that work? What would be the incentive to qualify well?

How about running a fuel ballest for the top 6 depending on the race results from the previous gp.

1st = 50kg
2nd = 45kg
3rd = 40kg
4th = 35kg
5th = 30kg
6th = 25kg

That could mix up qualifying.

Can we get agreement on what is wrong with qualifying? And please, no ballast.

F1 has always been about the fastest car - why equalize? If you artificially equalize you might as well move to a spec formulae and save a billion pounds a year for everyone.

I would like to see points awarded for quali top three, fastest lap and fastest pit stop.

Nothing wrong with quali as it is smile

I don’t have a problem with the current format, I’m just simply taking part. Personally I think F1 needs to open up the rule book, the best motorsport eras was when the rule book was small.

tongue out

A great idea, but how the hell you put it into practice ..... no chance; as they'll all be racing to go around the slowest hehe

Although the ballast idea could have legs
