The only time we'll really know where Williams, or any time is at the moment, is at the end of qualifying in Oz.
If they appear in to be lower midfield it will be presumed they are running light to hide how bad they really are.
I want to be optimistic but it's difficult.
Normally I would agree about waiting for qualifying. But... They're going to be back of the pack this season. They just are! The only question left imo is how many seconds a lap, or in fact how many times per race we can expect to see them lapped. If they appear in to be lower midfield it will be presumed they are running light to hide how bad they really are.

At least they're running this morning though. I see Russel just did a 1:49, did he get lost? (I can just see timing, not live footage).

He must be doing aero mapping or calibration work (that all teams did last week)At least they're running this morning though. I see Russel just did a 1:49, did he get lost? (I can just see timing, not live footage).
Red Bull looking quick.

Does aero work when your driving 25 seconds off the pace? They're taking it increadibly gently. Red Bull looking quick.
They're now down to 1:20.724. But what does that mean in the context of everyone else and whatever everyone else is doing. I'm not saying trust me they'll come good. I'm hoping they'll be better than what is being presumed here but at the end of the day I'm not confident they will be either. It's a shame to see them written off and if they are 2sec/lap off the pace, well that's not even racing is it...

I'm not a F1 engineer so I've no idea what they are doing and why.

It's a relief to see them get into the 1:20s for sure. They're now down to 1:20.724. But what does that mean in the context of everyone else and whatever everyone else is doing. I do find it hard to believe they won't be stuck at least 2 seconds off the pace come Oz. The car looks like it's pretty basic in terms of aero compared to the others. Like it's an early vanilla prototype more than a refined finished product.

This is an interesting look at the Williams design.

Genuine question... I look at the car, and others... I couldn't tell you what will work and what won't by looking. How much can they average punter, presuming you are (?), really tell by looking?

It's not so much understanding why/how the aero works, it's more that it all looks less detailed than the other cars. Just looks less evolved to me.This is an interesting look at the Williams design.

The McLaren looks incredibly slow. Wonder how they're feeling watching the Honda engine blasting Gasly into 2nd place. Nice to see the Williams in the thick of it, and with the Mercedes engine they'll hopefully have reliability on their side atleast.
I think McLaren have an issue with the car, as they haven't really been running today. As for Williams, are they on a full fuel load? I don't think they will be.

Norris managed 38 laps before stopping.Apparently Sainz gave an interview over the weekend that was quite downbeat.

I would say that we are behind Ferrari ... No, seriously, we do not know where we are, until we get to Australia 2, we will not know, and at the end of this week, a bit.
It seems that we are six or seven, but it may be true or false.
It would not be failure or disappointment not to score in Australia. It would be a normal starting point, it may be that we score in the first race, either for anything or for performance, although it is very early, but it would not be a failure, but a starting point and we should try to finish scoring in Abu Dhabi, which is the last race.
