Linky.

Self preservation at work. I always thought Perez was a bit of an operator, but he's gone the full Nelson Piquet with this one.

Well who has the balls to tell the truth about the boss's son?

Fair point, but what is he trying to achieve that saying nothing wouldn't have?

When's his contract up, and are Mercedes making noises about linking future engine supply to Toto's promise to get Ocon a drive next season?

Desperate move by Perez IMO because he know's the only way for him after RP/FI is down.

Who knows? Maybe he's protecting his own seat by scratching some backs?

That's exactly what he's trying to do, and it's a gamble because he's just killed his credibility in the rest of the paddock, and his retention at RP next year might be out of his hands anyway because they don't need his sponsor money but they do need engines.

I actually kind of feel sorry for him because he's landed in probably the worst seat in the pitlane because regardless of how much he beats his team-mate by he will always be the one on the chopping block at contract time.

What would be the point in saying nothing when asked a direct question? It would be very odd.

At the end of the day he has access to massively more data than any journalist or armchair expert has.

Yeah, and his race engineers have access to massively more data than he has.

Perez has shot himself in the foot with this one because if the performance differential between him and Stroll turns out to be visibly massive then everyone would know he was bullstting, so what are his options now? He could deliberately sandbag to make his prediction come true, but that isn't going to endear him to the team either.

Or, maybe he can see something the rest-of-world+dog cannot and Stroll genuinely is better. rofl

Could you point me in the direction of an article from a Racing Point engineer who says that Ocon had better race pace than Stroll then?

(Racing) Point, missed. What reason would an engineer have to re-inforce or contradict Perez's clumsy played-out-in-public mind-games/contract negotiations?

My point is that the team don't have to take Perez's word for it whether Stroll is faster than Ocon or not. They can see the performance differentials for themselves so the statement is not for their (or Stroll snr. or jnr.'s) benefit.

There were a million and one more diplomatic answers he could have given to the same question - it is too early in the season to say, they are both very good, the cars/tyres/aero-regs are different so not fair to compare etc. etc. etc.

Surely it’s not a surprise?

He’s never going to say a team mate is slow. What if he can’t beat him?

This way he can justify more poor performance from himself.......
