That's exactly what he's trying to do, and it's a gamble because he's just killed his credibility in the rest of the paddock, and his retention at RP next year might be out of his hands anyway because they don't need his sponsor money but they do need engines.I actually kind of feel sorry for him because he's landed in probably the worst seat in the pitlane because regardless of how much he beats his team-mate by he will always be the one on the chopping block at contract time.

Yeah, and his race engineers have access to massively more data than he has.Perez has shot himself in the foot with this one because if the performance differential between him and Stroll turns out to be visibly massive then everyone would know he was bulls
tting, so what are his options now? He could deliberately sandbag to make his prediction come true, but that isn't going to endear him to the team either.Or, maybe he can see something the rest-of-world+dog cannot and Stroll genuinely is better.

What reason would an engineer have to re-inforce or contradict Perez's clumsy played-out-in-public mind-games/contract negotiations?My point is that the team don't have to take Perez's word for it whether Stroll is faster than Ocon or not. They can see the performance differentials for themselves so the statement is not for their (or Stroll snr. or jnr.'s) benefit.
