I'm off to Hungary on Thursday for the GP.

For those that have been, how much is a beer within the circuit? As I note that taking in your own booze is prohibited.

Also, any other recommendations or things/places to avoid?

I did the Hungary GP last year! Fantastic venue. Travelled up every day from Budapest on the trains! Very cheap way to get to the track! Its about a 2 mile walk, from memory, mainly uphill to get from the station to the track, depending on which entrance you need to use.

If you are spending some time in Budapest itself, its worth checking out the Buda Castle district. A lot of interesting buildings, displays and cafes.

Have a great time, I'd gladly do the weekend again!

Never been to the GP at Hungary, but I've been to Budapest. It's a lovely city. If you have access to a car you should pay Momento Park a visit. It's where they dumped all the soviet statues etc when they kicked them out of the country.

Don't, however, fall in to the trap of taking the locals up on their offer of paying for things in Euro's. It's usually twice the price of what they'd be in the local Forints.

also off to the Hungarian GP. any tips appreciated.

is the train the best way to get to and from the track each day vs the bus?

how busy is it leaving the circuit after the race, have to get to the airport fairly quickly either by taxi or train back to the city.

is the pit lane walk worth it for the thursday?

I'd think the train is much quicker than the bus but then I never caught the bus all the way to the track. The train was pretty quick. Get a metro/bus to Budapest-Keleti terminal and jump on the train heading for Mogyador. We got off at Szilasliget and walked up to the track from there. Its about a 2 mile walk from memory, mainly uphill through a little village. There will be 1000's of others so you cant miss it! Leaving the circuit takes time! Getting back on the train is a free for all!

I did the pit lane walk and it was ok, not as good as the Hockenheim one IMO as there was no ride around the full track, but with a bit of luck you'll be able to grab a quick word with drivers or mechanics and see what you want to see.

Its also worth using the Thursday as a practice run getting to the track as it is much quieter.

Can't remember off the top of my head but they certainly weren't expensive, even at the track.

At the track, there's a great arena behind the main stands, plenty of bars, food and party areas!

Great thanks!

I'm just trying to figure out how much spending money to take.

Normally yes, but forecast is only 25c at the moment.

Budapest is a lovely place; some great food and very nice people.

I do recall one year the commentary team were talking about temps of 42 in the stands, thankfully this year will be cooler and possibly with a sprinkling of rain. Fingers crossed!

There really are a lot of bars/food places at the Hungaroring, the food is pretty good too with the paprika chicken kebabs top of the list, great value too, as is Hungary generally, the only thing we found to be expensive was sun cream (which we'd forgotten for some reason).

PS If you eat out in Budapest and order a steak, unless you're Hannibal Lecter, when they ask how you would like it cooked may I suggest you reply "burnt to fk", you may get lucky and find it's medium rare, I ordered a medium and a good vet would have had it mooing in 5 minutes.

Taxi is not a bad option for getting to the track from central Budapest, we were there in 2015 and it was roasting and the (overground) train had no aircon, by the time we got off at Mogyoród, we were dripping wet. On Saturday and Sunday we got a cab out to the track and train back. If you do take a cab stick to the official Hugaroring cabs - 6x6 Taxi, Taxi2000 and Taxi4, any other cabs cost twice as much.

I was there last year and had a fine time.

Booked a taxi there which collected us at our flat and dropped us off 40 minutes later, with few delays, for about 45 Euros I seem to remember. Good small circuit and if it is too hot to sit in your seats for the support races head up to the car park overlooking the circuit (beyond the fan zone if it is in the same place as last year). We sat in the shade of a transit van and you can see much of the action and a big screen. It gets very very hot.

Good food and cheap refreshments, relatively speaking. The queue for the taxi leaving the place is going to take a good 2 hours or so. For what is likely the only time in my life I shelled out for a helicopter out of there as it was so much cheaper than any other circuit and we were back in town in about 12 minutes.

The city is okay. The castle is indeed very interesting and gives you quite the view over the place.

We went in 2017 and are back again this weekend, flying into Budapest on Friday.

Great city, we enjoyed a nice river cruise on Saturday afternoon after watching Quali in a central bar with a fair few other fans.

We went to the circuit via official taxi which was great, but despite killing a few hours at the waterpark after the race, not least to cool down, the taxi queue to get back to town was horrendous so not sure what we’ll do this year.

Helicopter back sounds cool, but likely won’t work for the 7 of us :-D

I predict the usual Budapest snooze fest after the recent amazing Grand Prix.

Followed by F1 is broken claims leading to bad press all over the summer break (seriously, why do F1 have the sttest tracks at the beginning of the season, the end and before the summer break?!).

To be fair to Hungary, 2015 was a brilliant race and last year wasn't bad either, every track has a bad race sometimes, look a Canada last year, nothing happened at all.

One of the reasons we go to Hungary, and for that matter Barcelona is that it’s generally a snooze fest on TV, so better to be there in person for the atmosphere at the circuit and the city! biggrin
