Seriously, who the hell is tuning in to watch the USA GP practice session 2?
Of all the hours of F1, F1 related and general motorsport footage is this really the best they can do?
Why not celebrate our champion and run the 2005 F3 season then the 2006 GP2 season, the finer points of which must be rusty in the biggest F1 nerds minds? What about a look at the '93 indycar season? Button taking the super GT title in 2018? Super formula I don't even know how to watch it, but has brits racing in it so scope for a UK broadcaster to pick up?
But no, old practice sessions wtf? They're only mildly bloody interesting to what, the demented 2% of F1 fans when they're bloody live, and I bet 75% of them have it on as F1 themed background fodder while they argue online. I bet if you switch it on now there's a 53% chance of it seeing elephants humping on a wildlife documentary because someone taped over the practice session AND NOBODIES f
kING NOTICED YET.
I mean wtf. All the racing series happening worldwide, through serious to downright fun, and we're (not) watching old sodding practice sessions?
Is there any formula 1 fans who'd rather watch a secondhand practice session [because F1] or some random crazy foreign s
t they could probably get broadcast rights for about 53p like snowmobil racing or tractor pulling ?
Sort it out.

Well yes that's my point, its not like they have the rights and don't show this stuff is it.
But when freesports, who's business model seems to filling a gap using whatever's left unwanted by the channels that have a budget, and from that in terms of powered competative sports they can find rallycross WC, American monster truck racing, drone racing, powerboat racing, motorbike enduro, motorbike trials and formula my point is perhaps sky could do a little better?
As for old f1 footage I thought sky had the rights as part of the f1 payments, I can't see liberty or whoever holds the rights wanting to rinse them for 15 year old f3 seasons?

The TV rights that are held by the Bernie Legacy (essentially FOCA and now Liberty) do not extend much further back than 1981. F1 existed way before 1981 and Grand Prix racing goes all the way back to 1906. Obviously, the further back in time you go, the less film or TV record there is of events although You Tube has revealed a surprising amount of pre-1981 footage - which I find fascinating. I especially like TV coverage from the 1960s.But when freesports, who's business model seems to filling a gap using whatever's left unwanted by the channels that have a budget, and from that in terms of powered competative sports they can find rallycross WC, American monster truck racing, drone racing, powerboat racing, motorbike enduro, motorbike trials and formula my point is perhaps sky could do a little better?

At one point, ESPN seemed to have access to a lot of 1970s stuff. It's out there if you are willing to go hunting. And more old material is finding its way onto You Tube as the years go by.
It is pretty tedious, although as you say I am one of those that occasionally has the FP reruns on whilst cooking or decorating etc. I'm not watching though, just listening to whatever the commentators are chatting about.
I did purposely sit down with some beers and re-watch the Azerbaijan practice and quali sessions though, they were highly entertaining! More so than the race. https://www.skysports.com/watch/video/sports/f1/11...
That was Russell's car destroyed in FP1, and then the following day kubica destroyed his during quali - not a bad result for a team that went in to the weekend complaining of running short on spare parts..

Sky F1 stated aim when winning the F1 rights was that is would not become a 'motorsport' channel but only an F1 channel. The only exceptions to this are those races that are held over a GP weekend, such as GP3 or F2.
They do have the right to F1 history and have shown in the past races from the 80's and 90's.
I suspect the F1 USGP FP2 highlights are part a a whole re run of that weekend's coverage.

You do realise that the history of Grand Prix racing and F1 does predate 1981?Sky will show races from 1981 onwards because 1981 was the year that Bernie Ecclestone sorted out the first TV deal encompassing an entire season. Prior to 1981, there was no single overarching season-wide deal so individual races were agreed with individual TV companies or national broadcasters on a race by race and on a year on year basis. That is why Sky has no automatic right to anything prior to the 1981 season.
It doesn't mean they can't show pre 1981 races - but they would have to negotiate separately to get access to those older races.

that's a noble idea but doesn't exactly offer much for the subscriber when its December does it?Oldwolf said:
I have an idea...
Why not show Dakar on the F1 Channel (please) in January as you CANNOT convince me that there's only half an hours coverage each day (less adverts etc) which Eurosport will show as long as the snooker doesn't overrun </Rant>
I seem to recall they timed the formula-e season to make better use of the F1 off season last year, which makes brilliant sense, given a lot of the starved of action race fans will watch just about anything to alleviate the withdrawals. Why not show Dakar on the F1 Channel (please) in January as you CANNOT convince me that there's only half an hours coverage each day (less adverts etc) which Eurosport will show as long as the snooker doesn't overrun </Rant>
But just about every other global motorsport series bases its season around the European or northern hemisphere I guess summer - given the global reach today this seems unnecessary.
They're at it again - Spanish practice highlights anyone?
With many having time to kill and no one even knowing when racing will resume, what better excuse to cherry pick classic past seasons and present chronologically every day or weekend day, that we might follow? Maybe even close it off with a bit of modern post race perspective and analysis, might be fun? Y'know give us something for the $$$ we pay sky, and take our minds off this current nonsense?
But no, funking w@nking practice highlights

I have been trying to pause my SkySports since Friday - phone lines rammed, website doing nothing.
I get that they are inundated so, for now, I won’t start b
hing at them & I will keep on trying.
I managed to get through this morning using 0800 151 2747, It said it was going to be a 20 minute wait but got through straight away.I get that they are inundated so, for now, I won’t start b

After I said I had tried many times online to cancel, as suggested on their site, and that people on the Sky forums are angry about not being able get through and not being able to simply switch it off as you can switch it on. Her reply was, we have millions of customers, we don't have to do this at all. I asked for her name and said that they do have to do it as they aren't providing the service I pay for. She then started arguing and said she wasn't going to cancel it as I'd been rude

The phone went dead but then music started playing so I thought she was putting me through to a manager, as I'd requested. A few minutes later she came back on and apologised and cancelled the subscription. I chose not to pause the account.

I know its her job to be nice to customers regardless, but maybe she is going through a tough time. Be careful what you say to the nutters on the other end.

There's another thread going on the same thing here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

they don't help themselves though. I rung up the other day to cancel, spoke to a guy who "put me through" to the waiting list to speak to the cancelly person. I gave up after 20 mins as I had things to do. This is BS - he could have stopped my account and if they want to ring me to haggle they know my number. The "wait" is a construct designed to irritate and put off people and if their staff are being abused at the end of it it's a small wonder. I've also tried to cancel via "live chat" and found myself in a loop of perpetual stupid questions with a machine.Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
