I remember one turned up unannounced at the Southend Airshow ca. 2000. It did one fly past and was never seen again. Very stealthy.

I always wondered with that thing how the thrust ever actually managed to get it off the ground, those nozzles are so flat, thin and seemingly ineffectual, yet that is what the plane relies on to take off.

it's so alien compared to modern planes or any other jet in reality it just never looks right to me, a long flat basically board of outlets, just seems like it would be very restricted!

It's just good ol action and reaction. The aircraft is fairly light, and isn't a supersonic, fuel hungry beast, so its thrust requirements are low.
Ok, it is weird looking, but form following function etc.

The wide thin bits you see aren't the engines "nozzles" as such, those are deeper within the bodywork, those wide thin parts are more of a diffuser used for mixing the exhaust with the air, dropping the pressure and heat/noise.
