As we all know, Grand Prix racing did not begin in 1980, so why not have a thread covering the Grand Prix/F1 scene before 1980?

I'm showing my favourite cars from the pre 1980 era -

I followed a link to a website called F1Geeks who stated that the first F1 race was the British GP of 1950. yikes

Always loved the M23, it just looked right from any angle and in any of its colour schemes.

Grand Prix cars and F1 cars are not the same.

Grand Prix cars became F1 Grand Prix cars when the F1 regs started in 1950.

ASTON MARTIN

The car still works and is in beautiful condition.

I think you will find that the first F1 regs were a bit before 1950. Anyway, I don't want an argument as to what is or isn't worthy of including in a thread about Grand Prix cars. For me Grand Prix and Formula 1 are pretty much interchangeable. Grand Prix cars always met some regulatory criteria to qualify to run in recognised Grand Epreuves. It just so happened that from 1946 onwards, the set of regulations was called Formule 1 (after a short period of being referred to as "Formule A").
Formula 1 most definitely did NOT begin in 1950. What started in 1950 was a World Championship for Drivers.

For me, the history of Grand Prix/Formula 1 is one and the same - and that includes the two year period (1952/53) when World Championship Grand Prix races were run to Formula 2 rules.

The FIA World Championship started in 1950, and was run for F2 cars in 1952/53. It also included the Indy 500 for a while, so don't believe all this FIA crap about 70 years of F1.

1946 - Turin Grand Prix.

Quite a few Grand Prix races were run to Formula 1 rules (as well as even more non "Grand Prix" races) before the first Grand Prix of the newly established World Drivers Championship was held at Silverstone 1950. There had been Formula 1 Grands Prix held at Silverstone in 1948 and 1949 already.

You’re welcome. Not very much is written about that era and the FIA would have you believe that there was no F1 outside their championships.. When I was a youngster there were 3 or so non-championship F1 races in the UK each year. biggrin

It's almost like they deliberately want to pretend that there was no such thing as Grand Prix racing before 1950. I find it quite despairing because a whole heap of motor racing history gets completely ignored in all these celebratory events and anniversaries that they light on every now and then.

As a result truly great Grand Prix drivers who were active before 1950 are gradually disappearing from memory - people like Rudolf Caracciola or Tazio Nuvolari. And some epic races are also fading from memory.

Auto Unions Merc's of the silver arrow era, literally makes anything in the last 20 years look like karting!

I liked the mid 70's very close, unpredictable to some degree and massive variety in design.
