A crazy idea perhaps, but faced with the prospect of maybe six hours in the back of a car, four of which stuck in a jam looking for a tree, the wallet is loosening... is it too late to book a helo, and if so where from and roughly what cost please? We'd be coming from Essex.

Sywell airfield would be a good place to start looking.

On the silverstone site £1200!

Careful what you book at this late stage or you could end up on one of the first flight in and subsequently one of the last out , makes it a very long day .

Thanks for the info and advice.

Anything closer to Essex? Or is this better in Boats Trains and Planes?

Here’s one company advertising charters:
https://www.charter-a.com/private-helicopter/silve...

Give them a call and see what they can do. From previous experience, think of a big number and double it. Then double it again, especially if you’re going point-to-point.

There’s usually someone running a shuttle service from MK, which is way cheaper than chartering your own, so take a posh taxi or limo to the shuttle point.

Bikes in the boot/roof? Once you get within 10kms of the circuit, ditch the car and ride in which I appreciate it’s as glamorous but it’s a bit cheaper. 10kms won’t take more than 20 minutes.

Problem solved. It was getting too complicated; my companions seem determined to get up at stupid o-clock and sit in a car in a traffic jam for hours in and out, and see the earlier races too, which I have no interest in, so I've bailed. Ticket available.

from previous experience, it's really not that bad

Yes, you'll be queueing for a while near the circuit, but if you go at the right time it won't be hours and hours.

Much better than the old days. I live about 30 minutes drive from the circuit on a normal day.

In 1995, we left for the car when the F1 race had finished. Got home at 9pm (!)

In 2000, we left home on race day at circa 0700 and I got to my viewing point at Copse just in time for the warm-up lap of the GP. yikes

Last time we went 2018 when the World Cup was on.
Got to the car park early….. I mean 0630-0645, journey in was quite clear and easy through the gates. Bit earlier for the Sunday.

Leaving on completion of the activity. Yes busy not simple enough, ex dept Sunday. Gridlock so we played a game of “spit the council road rage”…..!!

Kept us amused, and of course we were able to have the obligatory conversation with the car next door about how ridiculous it was and why did they not do this and that!

Secret is keep a sense of humour.
