Football - the beautiful game eh?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/57818938

Thankfully no injuries and only his watch taken (which was worth more than most people's cars, but hey, F1)

It would be nice if he could turn a negative into a good podium finish this weekend - a win, even?

Glad Lando is ok.
It made me think. Which F1 driver past or present is most likely to fight back against a mugger (presuming unarmed)?
My vote would be Nigel Mansell, a very tough man who has training in MA

Adrian Sutil wielding a pint glass

Edit: It was a champagne glass. Very F1!

I know I’m victim blaming, but going to a football match wearing a 40 grand watch and driving a McLaren doesn’t strike me as the smartest thing to do. Glad he’s ok though, I want to see him do well this season.
I would have thought he would have been expected to do both as a Mclaren driver? Any sort of public event and F1 drivers seem to be wearing their Team merch. I am kind of surprised that Lando was wandering around the car park on his own though in fairness.

Can I change my mind and say Jos Verstappen, he seems to have the most previous for assault?

How stty is it that you can't just go to a match and enjoy yourself without a bunch of mindless thugs deciding to do this (amongst other antisocial behaviours). The type of scum that do this rarely see significant consequences so its almost inevitable. In their own country (assuming the mugger was English) somehow makes it worse.

Mansell would bore you to submission with stories about how he was the greatest fighter in history but didn’t have the right judo belt/boxing gloves/towelling robe and it was all someone else’s fault….

Keke Rosberg would kick the st out of you whilst smoking a fag.
Irvine was a bit punchy and would be useful in a scrap too.

I would assume that Lando didn’t pay for his watch and therefor he’s probably seen as an easy target? What motivation does he have for not handing over his watch without some resistance? He will be given a new one before this weekends GP.

Well, Bernie himself gave the example a couple of years ago, didn't he?

My bet would be Lewis, he's trained in martial arts I believe. Normally that teaches you to avoid the confrontation if we are to believe the movies, but if you have to fight, then better knowing what you are doing than not.

I wouldn't wear anything expensive going in a venue though. Especially a famous person, he becomes the target

I find it odd that you realise you are victim blaming but still post that.

I thought that the whole of F1 were organised into bubbles that allowed them to enter and leave the UK without the need to quarantine.

Being part of a crowd of 65,000 seems to be at odds with that requirement

I've seen a few quotes like the above ones on Social Media. How does it make it better that he 'didn't pay for the watch' or that 'he was at the football'?

Yes it was probably a gift from the team sponsors but he was still mugged, regardless of the details its still disgraceful that it happened.

it's strange that he didn't have some type of 'protection'.
Hand over the watch - the muggers have no scuples and could cause serious damage.

Also, at £40k was a it a snide watch or did the reporter not really know how much they trade for?
Would have made for a much more sensationalist headline!!
