Alonso in the Aston Team?
Discussion
I guess he's not been impressed with Renault/Alpine this time round and has reason to believe Aston are in good stead to make a leap next season - as they should be, there is no shortage of talent and facilities at the team, also a friendly relationship with their cheif supplier Mercedes.
Once Vettel announced his retirement I suspected Aston Martin would be looking for a flashy signing to replace him but I didn't expect this.
Not completely sure its a smart signing for AM at this stage in their evolution. Fernando could either be the galvanising personality in the car they need or he could be very destructive. Every aspect of the team is certainly going to be stress tested.
So that’s why Alonso was so effusive in his praise of Vettel on the retirement announcement. It surprised me at the time for when Vettel was in his prime he ( Alonso ) never had a good word to say about him . I look forward to seeing how it all works out although if history means anything expectations can’t be that high .
Don't forget that Aston have signed RBs chief aerodynamicist Dan Fallows as their Technical Director as well as signing Mercedes' chief aerodynamicist Eric Blandin to the same role, both of which start work this year.
That is very punchy and probably a bit more ambitious than Alpine who seem happy to plod around in 4th/5th consistently.

I'm thinking other than the money Alonso will receive this won't work out well for him and he probably would be better off staying with Alpine
With Alonsos history, Alpine will be challenging next season whilst he's back in the midfield.
I think if I was working at Aston Martin I'd be looking for other opportunities, can't see it being anything other than toxic there with a personality like Lawrence Stroll and a driver with a track record like Alonso's for pissing off team bosses.
I can see why both sides would want to, but I can't see it being a happy place to be.

More money and a longer contract I guess. Alonso better hope the car is better than this year though ..
He's not in need of money or foolish, I expect that he's seeing some other reasons to make the move and has a reasonable expectation that the future for the team will be brighter than this season. For all we know the design team have sat down with him and been able to explain exactly why their car is struggling this year and also why they can't fix it this year, but have a rock solid plan to solve the issues for next year.

This was confirmed by a recent Adrian Newey interview in The-Race. He said he the frustrations RB had with Renault was that they were happy to be in F1 primarily for the exposure of the brand; Renault were frustrated they weren't getting enough credit for RBR's success. That is very punchy and probably a bit more ambitious than Alpine who seem happy to plod around in 4th/5th consistently.
