There is a criminal charge that remains on which he will be sentenced. Payment of what's due and a guilty plea will influence what that sentence is and I doubt he'll be gracing the corridors of Wandsworth anytime soon.

The court heard that Ecclestone had agreed to pay a civil settlement of £652,634,836 in respect of sums covering tax, interest and civil penalties over an 18 year period.

So, he's still paying it when he's 111? Or have I missed something?

He should have paid the £400m 18 years ago, so it’s now £650m with interest.

It always amazes me how little consideration they have for their fellow man. The fact that the funds going into the public coffers could prevent a little old lady shivering to death due to a lack of funds would never cross their minds.

He was sentenced to 17 months in prison, suspended for two years

The £650m is what he owes HMRC now in relation to 18 tax years of underpaying tax. He either pays it or it is a claim on his estate if he dies before settling it.

I believe it was Chris Evans who said that if you owe £1000 and you can pay the bank it’s your problem, if you owe £10m to a bank and can’t pay that is their problem. Same thing really. We can’t afford to throw him in jail and waive payment. So we need to make sure everything we do means we get our £650m. Thats why the super rich get leniency.

He should have used the Red Bull defence that the £400m was a small error in the catering budget. He’d have got a trophy or something instead of a suspended sentence.
