Great overtake at Spa by Oscar. I think he is going to be 2025 Champion.

He will be. He's just a very sharp smooth operator like Prost.

While Crofty was wetting his pants over an imaginary race it was clear Piastri was nursing his tyres as he has done in multiple races this year and tended to maintain a 3s cushion (where Croft has also been the same).

He should have won Silverstone and would have a win in hand now.

He's a great driver, it's a shame he's as dull as dishwater and so heavily PR managed.

I don’t know that he’s as dull as dishwater but he’s finding his feet, gaining confidence in all areas and still young.

I am afraid I thought that half a dozen races ago, sadly Oscar has the cool head needed to win. Lando just seems to make mistakes when under pressure (even of his own making), Nico pretty much summed it up post race too..

I don’t think he’s dull - just chilled.

Yes, the McLaren PR machine will be protecting the corporate messaging, but Mark Webber knows the sport, and he’ll be keeping Oscar’s feet firmly on the ground.

Granted Oscar and Lando have the most dominant cars on the grid, that are flattering their performances, but Oscar looks like he has the depth of character of a World Champion.

In one of the post race interviews, Zack B said something like ‘Oscar is able to be extremely agressive while kdeping it all under control’ — not those words exactly, but he was clearly alluding to the scale of tallent that Lando has to overcome, while perhaps infering that Lando does not quite have that valuable & intimidating charcteristic in his driving. First time I have heard Zack SEEM ( to me ) to give the impression that Oscar is playing a better hand.

He's not dull just a typical Aussie, no nonsense or fuss. He's a likeable kid with no apparent ego issues unlike half the grid. Probably also something to do with him being vastly underpaid compared to the guy he's beating.

I like Oscar. I like his quiet confidence and coolness. The absence of bullst showmanship is refreshing.

Agreed, just going about his business and getting on with the job, he’s a bit like Scotty Scheffler, unassuming but deadly, got Lando in his pocket. Could we just agree that the phrase is ‘as dull as ditchwater’ does my head in.

I so miss the podium / three way interviews with it's diverse (using the term properly) racers.

eg

Senna
Mansell
Prost. ... A Classic Combo

et al .... Kimi. ... Eddie (Irvine!). ...

Three styles in all senses of the word.
Personality
Racecraft
Ethicity (Am I allowed to say or use that word?) laugh

What was wrong with the existing Piastri thread?

Your head isn't my concern. He's dull. He has zero personality. Dull on the radio, dull in interviews, dull in his interactions with other drivers. He's just dull. Boring. Good driver though.

I made the observation that Piastri was the stronger racer during last season. I obviously got flamed for that because Lando has a lot of fans and the assumption upto recent times was that he was more than strong enough as a racer to get a title - he just needed the right car. For a long time I thought that too.

But then in the second half of last season he got the right car, and he used it to great effect, right up until the point he had a mathematical chance of beating Max - when he then started to show signs of pressure affecting his performance.

At the same time Piastri was getting faster and faster and had delivered a couple of results under pressure, he looked rock solid. He is.

The only thing I wasn't sure about back then was whether he could match Lando's raw pace. The jury is still out on that I think, but my view is that there's no longer anything in it. Certainly not a delta large enough to make up for the number of errors Lando makes, and his tricky race starts/re starts.

The problem was last year he blew hot and cold. He could appear sensational in some races and then be completely anonymous in others and no longer the talk in town till the next great performance.

I think that distracted a lot of people from his trajectory back then.

But he was also getting faster through the season and at his age, there was no reason to expect that to progress to stop.

He only ever had to get close to Lando's pace for his cool driving and lack of errors to swing the balance. As it is, he's now imo on par with Lando's pace but also makes less errors.

I'm not claiming to have had a crystal ball... But watching him in the feeder series, it was easy to imagine him doing exactly what he's now doing in F1.

Having watched a lot of F1 since about 1980, I think Oscar is one of the brightest talents. Calm (call it PR/boring if you want to), very very quick and clean. seems to have immense personal control and assurance.

Kind of reminds me of Prost.

Meanwhile Norris will be self flagellating for the next week. He's a great race, and being human is great, but I think F1 drivers need a brutal outer shell of self belief.
