Are there any sane Insurers left?
Discussion
Hi all, yes I know that it's been done to death, but f
k me!
Last year my Insurer tried to increase my premium by 44% and after a lot of arguing, i paid around 35% more.
I'm just looking around again, as I'm due to re-new in a few weeks time. One of the quotes was 5 times what I paid last year and the lowest was around 50% more!
So, are there any Insurers out there not trying to take the piss, or are they all doing it?
I'm 56, live in east London, drive a Mondeo, Clean licence and 1 non-fault accident 3 years ago.

I empathise - my premiums have been going up for the last few years.
I am a higher risk driver than you as I am 28, but I now have five years NCB and still insurers are taking my trousers down.
My premium jumped by 35% this year.
It is apparently due to a high incidence of claims due to two snowy winters
But even more so due to the rise of uninsured drivers and insurance fraud.
It is a very very frustrating situation and one that as far as I can see we are powerless to do anything about.
Try using a broker instead of price comparison websites - in the last two years Chris Knott insurance brokers and more recently Sky Insurance have found me the cheapest cover and have beaten the best quotes from price comparison sites.
Hope this helps.

I find that the insurance company which shares its name with a large mammal is very reasonable, and they will price match any other their sister companies quotes, hence I've been with them for 7 years now.
My renewal was due on Friday for the 206 and the quote was £220, but I changed to a 2.0 Mazda 6 on Thursday night, and the quote only went up £80, kicking the price comparison sites buttocks.

I've found Tesco to be pretty good, my premium is exactly the same as it was last year and thats with going from a 318i to a 323ci at the age of 21.
Mine went up with them this year, from about £800 to over £1000, rang around managed to get sorted for £808 this year, Tesco got within £150 but lost my business after 5 years !Last year, I paid around £340, I think. Not sure if that's relevant?
One idiot company quoted me £1650! FFS, it's a Mondeo 1.8, I'm an ex-Driving Instructor, I've passed 4 advanced tests and I've not had an at-fault accident in 36 years!
I appreciate that they wouldn't know all of the above, as I've only done on-line quotes so far, but even so, I'm not exactly a big risk.

I recently moved house. One of my cars is insured with the large mammal and they increased the premium. Fair enough.
My other car is insured with the green and white company with the not-so-lucky "lucky" Jack Russell. Unfortunately, that car used to be insured as stored in a garage. Now it has to be parked on a driveway. They point blank refused to accept that a driveway is not the same as a street and that, if it doesn't have an aftermarket alarm fitted I won't be able to provide a certificate denoting the class of said non-existent alarm. In their infinite wisdom, they refused to insure it. Knowing the implications of this for seeking future cover, sorting this mess out took some considerable doing. The final outcome was continuation of cover without any change in premium, even though the large mammal tells me I'm now living in a riskier area and the car is now stored on a driveway and no longer locked away out of sight in a garage. Go figure.

A few years ago, I was trying to decide which car to buy next, and was toying with the idea of an E30 BMW 318is, for its simple RWD credentials. I went on a price comparison website and got some quotes as you do, with the cheapest coming out at circa £450, and the most expensive at circa £2000. All is normal up until this point. Then, while out at the supermarket, I receive a call from one of the insurance companies to let me know that they've had a think, and will actually be able to offer me cover for less than they originally thought- it will now cost a mere £1500 they inform me. I politely decline, stating that I've had a quote for far less.
Insurance Man on the phone refuses to accept this, and starts to question the whole deal. Am I sure that's the price and that it's fully comp? There must be some sort of mistake, as Insurance Man's computer cannot get the price that low. I managed to get rid of him fairly soon afterwards, but it was a rather surreal experience trying to explain how another company may possibly be able to give me a cheaper quote while doing the shopping; that company should probably have sent their advisers on a course entitled "Coping with Rejection".
cheapest cars for me seem to be £650 per year to insure (fiat panda's etc) moving up to 996 turbo's and M3's which seem to be £1600 per year to insure. A murcielago is around £1500 to insure.
essentially cars aren't that much more to insure if you have a very nice car (Range rovers are cheap for example) so the fact you are quoting a mondeo isn't much help as the majority of claims are for whiplash and personal injury now
in any crash where a car is rear ended the occupants each claim 5k whiplash generally.
try a better car and it may not 'feel' so bad paying for it as it's quicker etc.
try named drivers
shop around
driveway is cheaper than garaged in many cases due to accidents going in and out of the garage
limit mileage
increase your excess if you haven't had an accident in 35 years.
but, essentially insurers have been losing money and lost money last year collectively so they need to push up premiums. inflation is high too, insurance premium tax has increased too.
sad I know but we have threads on this all the time and we are all getting shafted. The tories are trying to get rid of no win no fee solicitors which could potentially help.

I have recently had a quote for insurance on a Fiesta 1.3Ltr, 2006 reg, for a 20 year old girl, with two years full license and one SP30 speeding ticket, as main driver with both parents on as additional drivers, cost? a reasonable £660 per annum.
The insurance on the wifes new X-type 2007 3.0 Sovereign came in at less than the BMW 5 serries 3.0 diesel we chopped in at £350 as opposed to £450, and my weekend runabout is down from £330 to £206, but all from different insurers than our present one.

According to an article in Porsche Post about insurance a couple of months ago, 40% of car insurance premiums end up going to the legal profession!!!!And the insurance companies highlight uninsured drivers when lawyers are clearly a far large problem...

That's £40....
Similar story here.
My automated renewal came in at £1128. Last year I paid 684!
Called them up at they stated this was because the car was now 25 years old! The best they could do was £1036. Via Tesco's price comparison, I've 'sorted' it for £626.
Jokers.
Is it any wonder that people resort to fronting or not bothering with insurance at all?
