Load knock on front end. How to diagnose?

Hi guys
My daily hack is an 170k Skoda Octavia Diesel boring-o-box. It has developed a fairly load and audible bang on the front off side. It sounds like metal-on-metal IYKWIM. It only happens when the wheel goes over a "bump" in the road, and ONLY when some form of lock is applied.
For example, there is a lowered kerb in the middle of a turn into the office car park, and a similar afair at home. Both require about half lock to turn the corner, and at anything other than a dead crawl, this load bang appears. It does happen at other places, but not often I have a raise/ drop whilst turning, on my commute.
I have changed the ARB drop link on that side, but the problem is still the same. Any advice on how to troubleshoot such an issue? What to look for in bushes/ damper etc. I have not changed any of the front suspension bits myself, I have had the car since 75k, so they are at least 95k old, and possibly they are original factory components.
I'm loathed to throw money at my hack unless it's totally necessary, it could expire in a major may at a moments notice and render anything spent wasted.
