MOT Fail?

My car was recently serviced and one point that came back was that my "rear tyres were out of shape".

Car is now due an MOT, would this be a fail item?

PS - tyres still look round to me!

It's a bit of a vague description. You've already checked that they're still round, so perhaps they mean it's wearing on one edge quicker than the other? Or the camber is wrong maybe.

Vague doesn't begin to describe it!

The fronts had worn inside edges, so the lack of roundness isn't that.

It's quite common. But not a MOT fail normally.

Get the wheel jacked up. Then spin it by hand quite fast. Compare the top of the tread with something like the suspension strut and it wil probably deviate up and down as the tyre is slightly egg shaped.

Do this, then disable the ABS and do a 90mph emergency brake to flat-spot it in the appropriate area to correct the shape.

A slightly egg shaped tyre can be indicative of worn shock absorbers.

Does your car wallow through bends?

Indeed, but it's somethings thats very common on VAG FWD cars in teh last 4-6 years or so. Not sure they ALL are knackered. I think it's a combination of our crappy roads and OEM geometry and OEM tyres that are generally softer than in the past
