What car has the best MPG....

at around 80mph?
I ask as I have been using a 2010 1.2 TDI Polo for the past few days and I must say I am disappointed with the fuel consumption. After getting fed up with the large hire companies refusing to tell me what car I could have (it will be a Focus or similar, probably some Focus sized Korean piece of sheet in other words), so I contacted my local VW garage who do hire cars, I said I was after something Golf or Passat sized, he revealed he only had 1.2 TDI Polos and went on to say their not what you imagine - they are excellent refined little cars with 70+ MPG! He offered me a great deal and I accepted.
I must add that I have done a lot of motorway miles at 80-85mph (in Germany, wink) and the car is getting absolutely no where near this, I haven’t done the sums but its probably 50mpg or under.
I Assume its down to the smaller engine working hard to maintain the speed. I remember TG doing something similar May V Clarkson, Polo V XJ if I remember rightly.
I’m curious what mass produced car has the highest MPG figures "cruising" at 80mph? Im guessing most contenders will be something streamline with a 1.8/2.0 diesel lump.

Why are you expecting a city car to get decent MPG on a motorway?
I can get well over 50mpg out of a 2.0TDCI Mk3 Mondeo on the motorway at 80, and that's one with a 5 speed box. The 6 speed box ones are slightly better. The Mondeo is geared for motorway use - 80 in 5th on a 5-speeder is sub-2000rpm.
