Can recommendations on a very limited budget?
Im selling my PBMWC race car but want something to replace it

Only limitations are price, wont be embarrassed on the odd track day and that it must be fun smile

Shortlist so far in no particular order:
  • Mazda mk1 MX5
  • Pug 106/306 Rallye
  • BMW 328 Coupe
What else am I missing?
smile

I like the thought of a Clio 172 as used to have a 16v'er back in the day and my cousin now has a 197 smile
Whats the reliabilty like with a 200sx? I know next to nothing about them

Rover 200 BRM

-LSD
-close ratio box
-sports suspension
-quick rack steering
-bigger brake servo

Not quite an ITR, but darn close imo and the closest thing to a DC2 that I've driven. Very good track car. Weighs around 1060kg with the VVC engine. Under a tonne and 170bhp+ is pretty easy to achieve.

Have you ever owned an MX5?

If not... give it a go. They're not for everyone.

But if you don't do it now, when are you going to?

Id fancy a mk1 as a mate of mine had ones years ago, I remember it handled very very well, it wasnt particularly quick but the handling made up for it smile

And that is precisely the reason they're so well loved.

Mine has been driven on its doorhandles for the last 15000 miles. biggrin

I'd be tempted to spend £1k on a Mk2 MR2 and then you've got a few hundred quid for tyres and suspension bits to keep it keen on track.
Or just go for the 328i coupe.

I've never seen a TR7 on a trackday. Serious question, do you think they'd be up to it, reliably, without much fettling ?
Standard suspension is very soft and standard brakes a shockingly crap. But both easy to sort and many/most have been. With that done yes, very capable.

Nuff said.
(I actually like TRs....up to a point. That point being when they reached the number '7' )

If you're thinking leftfield you could get a decent Sylva Leader for that and chase more recent Caterfields for a quarter of the cost. The looks might scare them by the time you caught up, mind.

For something more practical - again from the kit industry - you could consider a Quantum 2+2. They won't go like a Clio 172 unless you do something pretty extreme, but they handle well and the roof comes off. cool

Having 'done' both of the above, my vote would be the MX5, unless you plan to do a lot of motorway work or you need a large boot. And then perhaps the Clio.
