Chaps: what is the narrowest 4x4 that can be bought new today?

It looks like I will have to get a Panda - which I have heard rave reviews about, but I would prefer a little Subaru like the Justys of old.

I would like to stay with Jap reliability, but I am struggling to think of a small Jap 4x4 that will fit in to a 1930s built garage. A diesel lump would also be handy.

Any advice appreciated

cheers

Any Daihatsu Terios knocking around? (haven't they pulled out of the UK though?).

Pandas are great cars though. Very popular in The Alps.

Lada Niva were quite small (and IIRC, quite highly rated). Most probably rotted through by now?

thanks a million for the quick answers

although I balk at the idea of owning a Suzuki Jimny might go for that one.

as long as I can get it in to a little garage and I can get it through a foot of snedge I will be very happy!

those Ladas look amusing but I think 'as new' they are only available LHD (??)

The Jimny is one of the best performing 4x4's out there. Don't be fooled by its looks. It's embarrassed many a 'bigger' 4x4.

For example...

And yes, I know the driver of the LR hasn't a friggin clue. ATGNI

This.

Nothing more satisfying than watching a Jimny overtake a beached Discovery, Shogun or the equivilants on a hill, when it comes to a bit of snow smile

Plus, the Jimny is 1600mm width (inclusing mirrors) where as the Terios is 1695mm without the mirrors... Not sure if this helps... thumbup

Do you need it for traction of ride height. For traction, then this is the perfect choice as fun with it. Great little cars - a chap I know had one a couple of years ago and raved about it.

They do a Suzuki Swift 4x4, not sure if you can get it in the UK though. There's also a Suzuki Ignis 4x4 but this is a truly ghastly, hateful car with no redeeming features whatsoever, you wouldn't like it!

My mother in law has one and I've been made to drive it once or twice...

I can't claim any authority on this topic, but my 2p's worth: They be awful, but I think the Lada Niva would be a laugh in a 'crap car' sort of a way. A bit different at least.

Problem is that they only sold about 20.

But if you want small, mad 4x4 Daihatsus there is (occasionally) a Cuore for sale:

LOL as they say at the tandem

for the weekends yep, and certainly fits the bill with the width

the info re the widths was v useful, the Daihatsu looks right up my street in terms of a potentially slightly bonkers small jap 4x4 but sadly the official Daihatsu website is crap. If they are no longer for sale in the UK from new then ahm oot.

architects in the 1930s can't be blamed for not predicting how wide cars would get I suppose.
