As the title which of the above listed factors do you consider important when choosing a new car (either a fun car or a daily workhorse).

I think this poll would work better using AV but as we aren't getting that I have left it as multiple posts per user.

I answered for a fun car:
Acceleration and handling - it's got to be a fun car after all
Interior and exterior - I've got to like where I sit and smile when I open the garage

The rest don't matter to me for fun cars.

But it depends. When picking my currently daily a large factor was mpg. Because on occasions I do a lot of miles (180-200 a day).

When looking at weekend cars I couldn't give a toss about mpg though.

If I didn't put that in the opening post it would have made people ask, think of it as freedom of expression. I was more wondering how many people prefered image wink

Ticked all bar ride and top speed. Top speed is pointless in the UK really, as most car will top a tonne.

Ride - I don't mind a firm sporty ride, certainly wouldn't put me off a car at any rate. Never been in anything that rode so bad that I couldn't live with it.

The only one I couldn't live with was the ride of a Fiesta ST, a defender was a better long distance companion.

I ticked just about all of them except for;

- economy (don't care)
- marque (I've had all sorts)
- interior (as long as it's passable I'm more interested in the oily bits. And when I'm in it I'm looking out of the windows anyway)

I only ticked image as it's important to the OH.

I suppose top speed is irrelevant - but I still sort of like the stat. In a saddo kind of way.

I'd say the way a performance car handles is the most important thing, followed by the willingness and responsiveness of the engine (more so than the power), then the noise(!), then the interior styling, then economy if it's a regular car, then the exterior styling.

I guess, increasingly I'd put braking up there somewhere too - there's nothing more irritating than an otherwise sublime car that forces you to ease off to avoid cooking the brakes. It's understandable if you're 15 laps into a track day on a sweltering hot day, but some road cars are woefully underbraked even for fast road driving.

I'm not so fussed by image, but I did tick it. I prefer something more leftfield, so like the image of not picking the most obvious.

As for desirable images, well I'm probably against the grain. In my own personal view the cars with the worst image, and an image I'd not personally want to be associated with, would be a modern Golf GTI, Passat or a good number of Audi's.

Noise needs to be on your list!

The farting and banging of the RV8 is one of the main reasons I have my current toy.

While my car history doesn't demonstrate it, because my cars have been bought with head rather than heart, I too prefer to not drive what people expect me.

I wouldn't not buy a car I liked because of it's image but I do find it odd that to some people German marques especially are the greatest thing ever or overpriced baubles driven by cocks but often nothing in between. I do have a habit of baiting people though so if someone told me a car was awful and I shouldn't buy it then I do if they are people I see regularly, I did stop short of buying a pink Yugo 45 with a webasto roof though.

No more options, but a very good point.

Handling: It's the attribute you can't put a figure on and also the most important. Your car could do 0-100mph in three seconds and generate 10G on the lateral scale but if you don't have the communication to go with it, it's redundant.

Interior: I want to sit somewhere nice.

Handling.
I'm not really bothered by anything else.

Yes a nice place to sit & some performance are nice, but handling is number one for me. smile

I know you can't add any more options to the poll. But 2 or 3 key things for me would be:

-FUN, actually, this is THE most important thing for me. I simply can't do owning and driving a dull and boring car. It has to be fun and/or interesting on at least some level. In relation to another recent thread, this is exactly why I like and would own a PT Cruiser. Not because it's a good car, or because of its image. But because it's fun, its an event. Fun doesn't have to be just the driving experience, but the entire package. How it makes you feel when you're walking up to it for instance or how you feel when you are washing it.

To me, there really isn't a more important attribute.

-Conceptual progress & initiation. Meaning the how and the why the car exists. A good example is the idea and development program behind the original Lexus (LS400). I truly love how and why it exists and just how much effort when into creating the car, brand and dealer network. I love the fact they totally over engineered all of it, to be the best. I'd buy one just because of this. The Dodge Viper is another great example, at a time when most where downsizing and looking for economy, this car firmly stuck 2 fingers up at the establishments. Fantastic!

-Heritage & achievements. Maybe of lesser importance, but I do have a keen interest in a car or marques origins and what they've done. From simply tie-ins like loving Impreza Turbo's due to their WRC success and seeing Mr McRae flinging them from hedgerow to hedgerow.

But even more obscurer reasons, such as how advanced the Rover P6 was when launched. Or how Jeep invented the civilian 4x4 market and pioneered in the 80's with full monoque/unibody designs.

The Jaguar V12, and engine born out of a race car. Displacement set by LeMans racing regulations and an engine so smooth you'd think it's from the future not the past. And all at a time when V12's where really only found in ultra expensive supercars, not more every day machines like Jaguars.

Handling and performance(acceleration) for me. If there had been a build quality box I'd have ticked that too.

Also, intake noise - this was a big decider for me.

"motivating the NSX with any real urgency requires plenty of revs - which not only produces rapid acceleration but THAT noise.

From around 6,000rpm when the VTEC's high lift lobes take over until the limiter cuts in at 8,500rpm the NSX emits a sound that's probably best described as a cross between a roar and a wail. It is quite simply aural ecstasy for petrolheads and it's a pity we didn't grab an MPEG to go with this report because it must rate as one of the best road car soundtracks ever."

I answered:

Exterior styling - Something that I can look at and be proud of.

Marque - I only buy European cars.

Performance (Acceleration) - Always nice to have a fast car.

One of the big reasons I would normally favour an N/A performance car over a Turbo or Supercharged one, too few cars do it well though.
