Can the main driver on an insurance policy be different to the name that appears on the V5C form?

I am looking to buy my daughter a car in the next few weeks. I would like to have the log book in my name. However, she will be the main driver with me as a named driver.

She lives at home so the address will be the same as the log book. She is 21 yrs old and I do not want to be guilty of fronting, but will the ins company allow her to be the main driver if I am the registered keeper?

If you're buying it for her why do you want it registered in your name?

If she's old enough to drive, she's old enough to be the registered keeper of a vehicle.

And hopefully, responsible enough!

It's just that I will take it for servicing etc. so rather than having to keep saying things like "I'd like to book my daughter's car in for a service" if it's on their system under her name, or if anything needs sorting out under warranty, then I'd rather sort it out rather than seen to be acting in her name.

She is a student, and I foot the bills, so I'd rather have my name on the log book.

If I can't insure it in that way then no problem, I'll put her down as the registered keeper.

It makes no sense still.

Is it really so you can take it to the garage for her?

I'm not the registered keeper of the car I drive, nobodies ever asked!

If it's her car, register it in her name, there is no legitimate reason not to.

Yes she can, but some insurers may price a little higher because it isn't her car. Register the car in her name and add yourself as a named driver on her policy, then just book the car into the garage for work without needing to justify who the car belongs to the garage won't care.

It shouldn't be a problem either way. Nearly every lease car in the country (and that's a lot) will show the lease company on the logbook but the insurance (and in some cases the servicing) will be in the name of the user.

The front of the V5 says in big letters "This document is NOT proof of ownership. It shows who is responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle.

I still think the OP has created a problem which doesn't exist though.
hehe

In short, yes they can.
You just need to be upfront about who is the owner (you if you've bought it) who is the registered keeper (you if you're on the V5) who is the main driver (her if she has main use) and who is the policyholder (most likely you if you arrange and pay for insurance).

The insurance company will of course be a bit non-plussed and no doubt use it as an excuse to charge more.

It's generally much more simple in most cases to have all being one and the same and make them solely responsible for all paperwork, MOT, servicing etc.

Registered Keeper (on the V5) = Person responsible for taxing, insuring, MOTig it etc and where the speeding fines go.

Owner = Person who owns the car, and would recieve the proceeds when it's sold.

Main Driver = Person who drives it more than anyone else.

Generally the Owner and Registered Keeper tend to be the same person. There's no reason why the Main Driver should be either of those two, indeed it's entirely possible that 3 people legitimately fulfil the three roles.

It's not a problem for insurers.

[Fronting would be saying that you're the main driver when it's really the kid. This is a problem because you're misrepresenting the risk, by telling the insurer that the kid won't be driving it much, when really they are. Owner/Reg Keeper don't come into it, appart from in some cases it's circumstantial evidence that the Kid is the main driver, if they are also the owner and Reg Keeper but claim on insurance NOT to be the main driver. Possible, but pretty rare that this is really the case.]

Thanks guys.

I'll just put the car in her name, just to keep things simple.

The reason for the question in the first place is that I bought a car for my other daughter several years ago, and the dealers were incredibly snooty about dealing with me when we had some warranty issues dealt with (all simple stuff). They made a big deal about me dealing with it when it was "my daughter's car".

Of course, I did correct them, that although she was the registered keeper, I had paid for the car and it was mine in ownership. I won't be using that dealership again, needless to say.

Yes

Although the insurer needs to be told that she's not the registered keeper. I've never known it affect the premium.

I makes no odds whose name it is in for the purposes of servicing etc. My local dealer has never seen my V5 document so doesn't know what name is on it!
