Hi

I have done a quick search but couldn't see anything. I wish to buy a car that currently has private plates. The plates will be included in the sale, however any costs incurred with the transfer will be mine to bear.

What is it likely to cost, and what would I need to do to transfer it all to my name? As soon as I get the car, I intend to take the plate off and sell separately.

Thanks

If they're on the car it will cost you nothing until you remove them to sell. Then it'll cost you £105 totake them off, get a retention certificate and have another plate put on your car.

AFAIK, if you buy a car with a private plate on, the plate is yours - it goes with the car. There is no need to transfer the plate separately.

Then once you have it, you put it on retention, and DVLA issue a new plate for the car.

Then you sell the number.

No cost to transfer to you, it's attached to the car so if buy that you buy the plate. Once you have your name on the v5 that shows that reg , then you can transfer either onto retention cert or directly onto another car, £80 transfer fee but you can get buyer to pay, £25 more to put it on retention certificate, you prepay the £80 transfer fee. (doing the fees from memory, so could be slightly out).

Edit: posting from phone, too slow hehe

Thanks guys and girls, that is brilliant. Having never bought a private plate before, I was a little in the dark.

Thanks again
