Well it looks like we will be picking one up tomorrow! Decide to have some summer fun and will be heading to Luxembourg in just over a month in it.

Anybody have any experiences, good or bad, with this classic? My girlfriend and I have always loved them but never been brave enough to get one. Now we have the money to buy a decent one and cannot wait!

I had one of these in the late 80's and really loved it. The brakes were shocking mind, even then eek

Sold mine in 2007 and still miss it. The brakes were fine but I think that's because it was LHD and didn't have the additional piping that RHD cars have which dulls the brakes somewhat (someone can hopefully correct me if I'm wrong on that point). Mine was a 1990 model and had no rust on it, which can be a Mk1 weak point, but I think that was due to the fact that the car originated in Spain. They are mechanically strong though and if something does break parts are relatively cheap.
My wife and I toured round Europe in it when we lived in Holland and we have some very fond memories of it.

The Mk1 Golf forum is worth a visit http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/

This was mine

I had one for a while, the only bad thing I remember about it is the fuel filler pipe was metal, and exposed in the wheel arch. It had badly rusted (massive hole in it) and my mechanic took 12 litres of water and crap out of the tank... So that's why it wasn't running right! scratchchin

i had one that cost me a fortune, a serious relationship and a flatmate but i still wont say a bad word about them because i loved it so much.

even if there were holes in the roof, a majorily wet carpet and the dodgiest alarm system controllor(involved touching 3 bear wires together) ever.

get some lowering springs, wide deep dish alloys, use the entire boot for a quality sound system and cruise around in a class motor

I had the same issue my MKII Scirocco (based on the MKI golf), it never got as bad as the tank filling up with water because the rust and water in the fuel killed one of the fuel injectors. Once I realised what was wrong with the injector I found the hole in the filler pipe and spent the next 10 minutes trying to work out how I'd managed not to pump petrol onto every garage forecourt over the previous few months.

Owned one for 6 years, used it daily for 3 of those. They are good fun, feels faster than they are, watertight as long as the hood is in good condition and a pretty simple motorcar in the none GTI form.

The parts are cheap, easy to work on, light on fuel as long as you keep the hood up on the highway and surprisingly comfortable on long journeys. They do rust around the sills, windscreen bottoms, rear valances, bottom of doors though and the infamous filler neck problem as above.

You also need to also make sure the fuel injection on the GTI is as it should be, although not a complex injection system, you need to find someone that knows the system.

One last thing, they are great in the snow, while other cars are spinning and slipping all over the place, the narrow tyres, light weight and non DBW throttle make driving in the snow a breeze.

Has to be a black one, guy had one in the pub I worked in, was seriously cool back then, I had a tin top which drove better and was a bit quicker (occasionaly swap) despite it only being a 1600 but it may as well have been an excotic almost back then, the image was sky high in the late eighties and they still retain a bit of that now if tidy.

20VT conversion ftw !
