Does it need, and I mean NEED to be a hatch? How often do you carry more than 1 other person and what sort of large objects do you carry?
And - do you need to carry the people or the objects?
Have a look at this weeks SOTW. That is more the type of car I'd be looking at. And in fairness many cars of that type will actually seat 4 people and have a boot, so are arguably 99% as practical as a small 3 door hatch. They just happen to look way better than almost all hatchbacks and are usually right wheel drive or AWD and more often than not have a better sounding and more interesting engine than an inline 4.

The only reason i want a hatch is because they seem to be cheaper for me to insure im 21 i originally wanted an Mr2 but even just the 2.0 was around 1400 a year so i thought i should stick to hatchs till im a bit older although id love something like a 300zx.
