hehe

Must admit I don't trust them. Not sure why, and never driven a car with it, but I don't think I'd be terribly comfortable with it.

laugh. Never driven a car with stop/start.

I guess it'll be a real ballache on older cars

The Passat I drive has it and I like the fact that if I accidentally stall it (quite easy with a 1.6 diesel) it restarts automatically without any intervention which has been quite handy. It did surprise me the first time it did it though!

I have it on my car and don't use it. If I'm stopped that long, I'll turn the engine off myself; at all other times it's a bit of a pain.

Yeah, usually there's an 'eco' button or equivalent that disables the stop/start feature.

I always suspicious of such things but I drove a Merc B Class with it and I must admit it worked completely seamlessly.
Apparently the Merc system is different to others in that it's a belt driven starter/alternator so the car re-starts more or less silently.

I would probably have embarrassed myself by returning with the hump over the dodgy

how do these systems work in say a motorway tailback? do they stop/start everytime you stop? or do they only cut the engine, after a few seconds of having stopped?

Ive done the same thing a few times in my stepdads A4 TDI, I would have it switched off if it was my car.

As the car and battery gets older I would be worried about not being able to move off if the battery dies whilst you are in stop / start heavy traffic, could be a potential nightmare.

The Merc dealer pointed it out to me, and how to turn it off. It didn't work at all on the journey home as it doesn't work until the engine is warm and I think the outside temp has to be above a certain level too.

It doesn't take much effort to start a warm engine. More generally though, a lot of the advanced systems being fitted to cars these day are going to be a nightmare as they get older.

It only turns the engine off if the battery voltage is high enough for it to be able to restart, if your battery is low the engine will keep running.

They cut the engine if you bring the clutch up in neutral, if you are in stop/start crawling you can keep it in first with the clutch down and the engine will keep running.

People have been saying the same throughout the history of the motorcar. What is advanced now will be simple in a few years time.

Stop engine, allow oil to drain to sump.
Start engine drive 500 yards then stop engine and allow oil to return to sump.
