Am I Missing Out On Anything?
Discussion
I'm fairly decided my next car is to be a Jaguar XJ6 but am I missing out on anything? You're probably not going to sway me but I like to see if anything really different catches my eye.
Criteria:
Must be a large, cruiser with lots of wood and leather.
Must have been manufactured between 1960 and 1985-ish.
Must be insured on classic insurance.
Must be not too bad fuel wise (15 mpg) as will be used daily.
Must be able to get a nice example for up to circa £5,000.
Must have at least 6 cylinders.
Would like to be tax free.

Year before last I sold an XJR X308 with 75,000 on the clock and FSH and new tyres for £4200. I had numerous people visit and end up buying same spec cars for less money.
Perhaps you could get something similar within budget? Even if you prefer the straight six, the merc box on the X308 is much better. More power as well of course.

X308 is really quite a bit too new for me. I couldn't insure one on classic insurance and as I'm 22, they are silly money to insure through the "usual" type of car insurance.Perhaps you could get something similar within budget? I must admit I think the X300/308 is a lovely looking car, if not quite as nice trim wise as a "Series" Jag?
I believe the XJR is rather quick as well?
Would certainly like to try but not to buy for me, I don't think.

Jenson Interceptor = wont be a minter for your budget but do-able
Both OH and I have got the Interceptor on the "must do at some point" list
I really do not believe you can buy anything but a total pear for my budget though! And a MOPAR big block would probably be into single figures MPG wise - great when I've got quite a bit more cash than I have at the moment but unfortunately until then I need to be a bit more sensible - hense no Jaguar XJ12s. It really does need to get about 15 mpg!

I'm not discounting a Daimler version. OH said he's not going to allow a V12

Who's car is it? Surely if its yours, its your decision.

I need to be a bit sensible and something achieving around 15mpg is a good compromise IMO for an everyday car, if it gets more - great but I'm not becoming an eco freak yet LOL!

Not wanting to sound condescending, but what a fantastic little collection of cars you have for a female at 22! I'm 23, bought my XJ40 Sovereign just after my 22nd Birthday and I love it.My Grandad has owned every (good) model of Jaguar and Daimler from 1970 through to 1996 and maintains that his Series 3 4.2 Sovereign was the best of the lot.
May I ask who you're insured with on the Porsche? I promised myself a Porsche before I'm 25 and these are looking like my only way in!

We share cars, there isn't really a "my" car and a "his" car.

Well if you're paying for the car with your own money, I'd be very tempted to ignore him. Fuel might seem extortionate, but its cheaper now than it'll ever be. This is probably the best opportunity you'll ever get if the V12 is the one you really desire. The first Jaguar I played with was an XJ40, 2.9 Auto base spec model. It was my partners when we first met, inheirited from his grandfather. It was the first car that got me into thinking about a Jag myself.

How long have you had your XJ40? Is it a keep for you or a passer by?
Interesting, I'v drove a couple of Series 3's and really liked them - not ruling one out at all.
Did he say how it compared to the S1 and S2? As it's a Series 1 I've sort of set my heart on really! Porsche - I'm insured with Lancaster, it costs me £500 for a 23 year old it's only £200 per year. I've had 6 Porsches and my favourite has been my current early 944.
If you're interested in a 944, mine will be up for sale soon. It's a lovely example (rare, most are dogs and rotten underneath).robsco said:

Damn, I was going to say P6 V8!

Also, I love the fact that "not too bad on fuel" = 15mpg

I'm not an eco-freak but do need to get over single figure MPG
15-20 seems OK, I'v never had an economical car what you've never had, you can't miss, you see.
