Spotted: Mitsubishi L200 Pick-Up. With 500bhp

Yes, we know L200s are hardly the last word in style, but a 500bhp turbocharged Supra engine definitely has our interest...

For the discerning PHer, an old-ish Mitsubishi L200 with some big, shiny alloys is not a vehicle that endows its driver with much kudos. For a certain young, rural type, fond of carting around the odd hay bale, however, it is one of the most desirable vehicles this side of a John Deere.

Even then, mind, you'd hardly call its turbodiesel motor an object of lust, nor its performance particularly exciting. But this particular L200 addresses this in rather dramatic style, because beneath the bonnet lies a Toyota Supra engine and gearbox.

Fans of engine designations will be interested to hear that it's the 2JZGTE model, while appreciators of bhp may be more interested to hear that, at 1.3bar of boost, it makes 500bhp - and the vendor seems confident that 600bhp would be easy to get to, as well.

Should make for more than the odd amusing encounter at the local traffic light GP...

You can pore over the final details of the car's spec in the advert, which we've reproduced below, but suffice it to say that, with the amount of stuff listed, we can well believe that the vendor has spent the £6k on it he claims to have. Which makes the £9950 ono price tag seem rather reasonable, especially as he says he'll slap a full year's ticket on it within the sale price.

He's surely looking at a pretty narrow market, our vendor chap, but there must be someone out there who really wants a 500hp pick-up with a mega-tune Japanese engine that looks like it's actually got more like 120bhp. We certainly love the idea, though we're not sure we'd be sufficiently amused to spend £10k on it...

Sure this car originated in Scotland, i seem to remember hearing about it some time ago.
Really glad to see it's got new brakes shoes fitted, sure that will make a tremendous difference.

Hmm... What about suspension? One assumes that it won't handle like a Supra?

I drive a Pickup with 130bhp, the thought of 500bhp is frankly terrifying!

If I had a spare £10k, I would buy this immediately. Absolutely huge sleeper appeal, and practical too :-)

This has been in the classifieds for months, which makes me worry there must be something up with it.

Pretty sure this is the same one I saw at a cruise in East Kilbride in 2009 if I remember correctly. So many people asked what engine it had as he kept revving the thing, which was pretty amazing sounding give the engine biggrin

Last I saw of it, was making it's way out a multi-storey carpark, every now and again spinning it's wheels. I think it's a great idea, if you've got a spare Supra engine laying around. Brilliant way of surprising people assuming that after you've surprised them you don't go spearing off into a hedge somewhere laugh

From what I can make out, the price! £10k is way too much for this surely?

Cool car though.

I swear I have come across this thing before, I was very surprised why the hell I could not catch it in a bloody hot hatch, and why the the front end of the L200 looked like it was pointing to the sky under acceleration, Now I know why. laugh

Is it still AWD, the advert doesn't mention any changes to the transmission apart from the supra gearbox, can the diff/driveshafts take all that power?
