Just looking at the other thread % of salary vs value of cars and got me thinking.

I know it's not the nicest of things to think about car ownership - but just thought we could have a little competition. Who has lost the biggest amount of money on cars over their lifetime on all of their cars? You can include any depriciation on your current car (based on an estimated value) Do not inclue any other costs - maintanance etc.

I'll go first - mine will be pathetic compared to some people, but over 8 cars and about 12 years i have lost about £18k

In terms of depreciation not that much, possibly £5k over 8 years. If I was allowed to include maintenance though....

Hmm, Corrado, about 2k, MG, about 0, Lotus, about 2k so far. The wife's Punto has probably lost around 1200.

So including the wife's car, 5200, excluding it 4000. That's in 13 years of driving.

Yeah but you've got an impressive garage/history. If you've naturally drawn towards pre-2000 barges then looking to get rid shortly after buying would scream 'expensive problems' and no one would touch it with a bargepole. Recipe for some pretty serious depreciation.

Thanks but i've always done it ever since i passed my test whether it was Nova's, Escort XR3i's,Focus's, E39's, Suzuki Vitara (the shame laugh ) so not just newer cars - in fact the best way i've found to do it is always buy cars 6-9 years old, avoid mainstream models and buy the best condition and best spec car you can regardless of where it is in the country.

I shudder to think.

8 BMW's, 3 Mercede's, 2 Vauxhall's, 1 Ford, 2 Skoda's, 2 Volvo's, - I reckon it must run to £60K easily.

Hmmmm
Vauxhall - £2,000
Audi - £3,000
Jeep - £11,500
S2000 - £7,500
350z - £8,000

£32k

Treble that for other associated costs I reckon.

Edit to add GAP insurance made up the shortfall on the S2000

E21 BMW 323i (red): Bought for £1000 sold for £400 (over 5 years) = -£600 (if I hadn't of emigrated I would have kept it longer and made money on it)
Porsche 928 S4: Bought for £10,400 sold for £7900 (over 6 years)= -£2500
1984 Mercedes 280 TE: Bought for £50 sold for £250 (over 1 year) = +£200
1994 VW Golf 1.9 TDi: Bought for 500 Euros sold for 650 euros to Poland= +150 euros (at the time= £100)
1991 VW Golf GTi G60: Bought for 2000 Euros sold for £2100 (3150 euros at the time) in the UK= +1150 euros= +£770
2004 Fiat Punto Dynamic: Bought as an ex R and D benchmark car for 1300 euros, sold for 4500 euros= +3200 euros= +£2133

Net= +£103

Guess I haven't lost much. I didn't realise how much I focused on depreciation when buying cars. You can focus on fuel economy and mpg all you want, buying a newish diesel with ipod compatible 'mobile office' interiors and be accepted amongst the trendies, or you can have fun with older cars that drink more and depreciate very little and arguably have more fun.

Yaris £3000 to £2500 = £500 loss over 18months
Yaris £4000 to £2500 = £1500 loss over 30months
205 GTI £900 to £1550 = £650 gain (written off)

Not too bad so far but I'm thinking of changing my Accord this year which will probably have dropped £2.5k over 18 months.

MG - £1500
TT - £105
Mondeo - £800
Gave the Corsa to my mother
Frontera - -£700
Impreza - £3495

Total depreciation £5200

Not overly bad but if I had that money I'd be looking at AMV8s rather than VXR8s...

In the last 12-15yrs probably in excess of £50k - ouch! Almost half that figure on just 2 cars, a classic Impreza Turbo & a BMW 330 Touring, both bought nearly new & owned for about 4 years each.
