Can anybody tell me if there is any way of finding out auction results for Blackbush.

I dont meant 'Classic car' auctions.

I am thinking of buying a 4x4 via this route and want to know what sort of saving thre would be over dealer or private seller.

Is there anything published anywhere ?

I'd be inclined to take a different approach.

Price up via Autotrader, PH, etc the vehicles you want.
Price up your "risk" factor - how much you are willing to spend on an unknown quantity that you will have had minimal time to inspect (physically or to check paperwork in detail)
Take one number from the other = ceiling price for bids.

You might get lucky, you might get burned. You might end up bidding on a model that a dealer already has a customer for and is willing to pay over the odds - in which case you might as well have bought privately with more time to inspect, etc.

There was a chap on PH a while ago who did writeups from Blackbush. I can't remember exactly but either he was asked to stop, or stopped of his own accord.

A bit of nous and you can beat auction prices (incl. fees) by buying privately every time. And the warranties in either case are exactly the same wink

What sort of money are you looking at spending? Do you have a shortlist of 4x4s in mind?

Thanks for the replies.

My thinking works like this :-

I need a vehicle that is approx no more than 3 years old as I have to change at 5 years to keep my company car allowance.

I need something with a large load capacity and is nice cruiser as I have 2 kids at Uni at different ends of the country.

I like the idea of a 'soft roader' not necessarily a true 4x4.

Now other than that I have an open mind, so if something that I fancy comes along at the right price, I can snap it up.

If I can save say £1500 at an auction and something does go wrong then I can still afford £1500 to put it right and still not lose.

I am a bit suprised that it is suggested a private buy, may be less than an auction price. Really ?

Can be, you can haggle with a private seller. A good turn out at an auction can push the prices up.

I don't have any issues with auctions. But to be honest you need to know what you are doing at one.

Have you been before?

If not, get yourself to a couple (with no money) and go and see what it's like.

As for prices - well it's an auctionwink there is no set amount you could save. And 4x4 is a little vague.... there are hundreds of different models.

Sale prices will be mostly determined by a reserve, condition and the people in the room. I've been to auctions where people have massively overpaid for a vehicle, yet I've also seen plenty of good deals too.

Just make sure you understand exactly what you are getting and don't forget to add the fees on too.

It's also worth noting, a big part of auctions is not about selling stuff cheaply, in fact you could argue that isn't an intent at all nor normal practice. What it does do is offer a large variety of vehicles in a single place. So if you are a trader and want to buy 3-5 cars, you can do it in a single morning at an auction. If you where trying to find 5 cars privately you could spend days, maybe even a couple of weeks and a lot more commuting.

If you use the advanced search on ebay you can check the completed listing, very few cars on ebay are auctioned, most are 'classified ads', but its worth a look, quite an eye opener.

Also found that Blackbushe in particular is not a great place for bargains - avoid fridays as they are always rammed with private buyers and i've seen many hammers fall on prices above the equivalient car on AT BEFORE you add the auction fee.

Agree with whats been said before, you can definately get a better deal by doing the legwork on AT and ebay - go and see cars before the auction ends and take cash, play on the "I'm here with money" aspect and you can get some really good deals
