Afternoon all.

I recently bought a new car, well new to me. I dont have the full V5 in my name yet, just the green new keeper's slip.

Road tax due end of the month...

- Can I tax it in the post office using just the green slip or do I need the full V5 ?

- If I can tax it, can I buy a full 12 months before 1st June or will I get shafted for a month unless I wait til 1st June to buy the disc?

Thanks!

You can use the new keepers supplement to get the new tax disc. Yes, if you tax the car before the first of June you will have to pay from the 1st May unfortunately!

You can 100% tax it with the new keeper slip, no problem there.

I think you can tax a car from today for June, I may be wrong but you can buy before hand I think.

You do realise you're connected to the internet? wink

As per the back of the slip, yes you can use it to tax it. You will have to pay from 1st May.

If you have just bought the car and don't have the reminder form you won't be able to tax it today from 1st June - it will run from 1st May.

Cheers everyone. Given its a Band K car I think I'll just tax it on the way to work on 1st June!

Nope you run the risk of being prosecuted for no tax. I went in my other car and got my tax disc on the first of the month for this very reason.

Do you mean that he should tax it on the 31st of May?

As legally on the 1st of June it will not have a valid tax disc and shouldn't be on the road.

Fair play - so I won't get away with driving a car to the scrapyard without tax on the 1st of the month then? frown

Up to you to risk it & potentially invalidate insurance (worst case). You can redeem the tax once scrapped by getting a V14 from the post office when your in there taxing it.

I bought my current car mid month and the tax was up at the end of the month. As I had the green new keeper slip and no V5, I did it at the post office but im sure that I had to wait until the end of the month, last few working days. Cant remember why.

You can buy tax that starts for the following month 14 days before the month starts.

You can use the new keeper's slip to tax in person at the post office. You will also need to bring proof of insurance and an MOT certificate. I don't think they check these electronically like you can do online.

If you want to drive it immediately then you can tax from the start of May. Or you can have it starting 1st june.

Regarding driving with no tax, the ONLY times you can legaly drive an untaxed car on the road is to and from a pre-booked MOT test or to and from a place where you have pre-arranged for work to be carried out that would let it pass an MOT.

If you want to try to drive your car with no tax at any other time it's illegal, but you might "get away with it". That's your choice and risk. It may net you an £80 fine, which might be a risk worth taking for a one-of, but it may also invalidate your insurance, which is a much bigger deal.

Your link answers your question, depending upon whether the car is currently taxed or not:

If your tax is due to run out at the end of the month, you can renew it from the fifth day of the month.

If your vehicle has been untaxed, because you’ve just bought it, the tax disc has run out or a SORN is in force, you can tax from the first day of the month in which you apply.

If you want the tax disc to start on the first day of the next calendar month, you cannot tax your vehicle more than two days in advance.
So, if the vehicle has a current tax disc, you can buy tax that starts from the 1st of next month, on or after the 5th of this month.
If it is untaxed, you have to wait until the last 2 days of this month if you want the tax to start from the 1st of next month.
