Sourced??? It's a Land Rover own engine, not sure exactly where the money came from to develop it, suspect BMW might have had something to do with it. I also believe BMW own the rights to the engine as well, hence why under Ford ownership they swapped it out to the 2.4TDCI unit.

I like Td5's, a well proven engine in reliability and performance terms. Often get a bad rap on the internet, although most often you'll find it's idiots moaning about other parts of the vehicle (D2 air suspension for instance), yet they still part blame the engine rolleyes

At the time Land rover were developing a range of engines to fit all the new models 4, 5 and 6 pot diesels for their range of vehicles. These engines were to use common parts such as crank, pistons, and rods I believe. However during this time they were bought by BMW and the plans for the Land Rover Developed 4 and 6 pots were shelved. However the 5 cylinder engine, that was to become the TD5, was developed for the Discovery 2 as the BMW 6 pot they initially wanted to use would not fit in the Discovery 2's engine bay. Obviously the engine was then fitted to the defender

IIRC it's based on the K-Series petrol engines, and as someone's said they had intended to do 4, 5 and 6 cylinder versions, though the 4 and 6 units never made it into production.

It means someone trying to be clever wink

s/c = supercharged
AJ is the engine familiy, being a Jaguar AJV8
The other numbers are just that engines model code, displacement and the fact its an LR unit
MY = model year, so 2010 model
RRS = Range Rover Sport

The only thing TD5 engine shares with a K-series engine is the word engine

Err...bks.

The TD5 uses some parts from the L-series Rover engine, but it's a Solihull product through and through.

That'll explain why it only puts out 136 brake then!! It felt a lot faster than that - probably the 220 ftlb torque. Why dont they source their engines from bmw, the road going bmw engines in a 2.0 seem to produce 170 / 200 brake and oodles more torque than these aged beasts..?!

Put it this way, your mate wasn't even trying. A 1.6 MX5 would eat any TD5 Land Rover for breakfast let alone one towing a cattle trailer with two bikes in it.

Stock tune is pants, far worse in the Defender. Remapped ones are like a different engine though.
