After seeing the tv ads and various banners on sites I quite like the looks of the new MG6 - my old man is looking for a new car at present and he has almost set on a new Focus - I mentioned the new MG to him and seemed quite impressed with the styling too. Do we both have particulary bad taste or could it be a grower? I know it's not particulary fast or advanced but it's a little bit different perhaps?

Any thoughts?

I reckon it looks quite hansom for an ordinary car. And the designed and built in Britain thing still appeals to me too.

In truth I can't see you being any worse off than buying any other run of the mil car. Fords, Vauxhalls, Kia's and even SEAT's all lose money at a very similar rate.

I like them. It seems like one of those cars that loses out badly in the 'star ratings' of road tests, but reading the experiences of the testers in between the rather draconian rankings, it seems like quite a good car. Seems fairly well built, fast-ish for the money and I've read nothing but praise for the ride and handling. Main complaints seem to be centred on the refinement of the engine, but I feel tempted to suggest that perhaps you can make an engine too refined to the point where it sounds and feels like it's not there, and at least it's been made reliable now.

I think it looks smart. Certainly better than the new Focus.

I only know what i have read and it's hit and miss, but perception is the problem here, peoples perception of the brand needs to change, otherwise no matter how good the car is it will depreciate like a lead balloon and to me that enough to put of plenty of buyers.

That's the key thing for me. For some reason a lot of new-car road-testers seem to have this rigid notion of 'classes' where everything must be compared to 'class leaders' within 'class boundaries', and it gets panned for not being identical to one particular car (usually either a Ford, BMW or Porsche).

On the other hand, I like a bit of character and individuality in design and engineering, something that sets a marque apart from its rivals. All praise to MG for being different, and no doubt their buyers will be happy with them. Same goes for Proton - they get a right kicking in the new-car press, but read between the slating and it's quite evident that the road-testers are enjoying the Lotus-tuned ride and handling.

It's unlikely to depreciate more than a Ford, and provided the Chinese develop the model line-up as they promise to, the brand awareness will inevitably change, and for the better.

Personally, I'm happy to see a new car that has largely been designed and developed in Britain, even if it is mostly built elsewhere.

By the sounds of it, it certainly has potential. Whether it fulfils it, remains to be seen.

For it to be a success I think they need two things: a good diesel engine and a good warranty.

And some dealers. I think there's one here in N. Ireland, and it's not even listed on MG's web site.

Yeah, obviously infrastructure is important too.

Does it do anything better than anything else in the price range? I didn't think so…

Diesel engine (designed in Longbridge) due in 2012 apparently.

Ride, handle and accommodate, apparently.
