Hi,

I'm obviously new here but I love cars. Whilst I wouldn't claim myself to be a true pistonhead because I don't know all that much about motors yet, I am learning and am looking to get a really nice, moderately priced, vehicle for my next car.

I'm currently driving a new style Ford Fiesta Zetec S (petrol) which I have on hire purchase, but I think I'm probably paying too much. I'm 2 years into the 3 year agreement (car is a 59 reg) but I've started looking round for my next vehicle already. I may choose to come out of the agreement early.

Anyway, I've been looking at the Mazda MX5 Mk 3 as a potential next car, probably used, but I'm not entirely sure. I'm after something quicker than the Zetec S which looks sporty, but not gaudy.

Any advice would be muchly appreciated. Oh, I'd be looking to keep my next car for around 3 years.

I could probably provide extra information if the above is too vague!

Buying a run of the mill motor like a Fiesta (which is a decent car in fairness) is always going to mean dropping a fair bit in cash.

MX-5's are decent cars if you don't mind the 'hairdresser' stick which comes with them. Mk3 is meant to be a pretty refined car and should feel fast enough coming from a Zetec S. I'd deffo look at used and an MX-5 will hold its value pretty well. Even cars close to 20 years old still command atleast a grand if they are half decent, amazing considering how cheap they were to buy new.

In your position, I'd also look at Civic Type R's, the last of old shape ones around 06 or so would be a decent step up from your Fester.

Cheers for the reply! smile

Yeh, I do love the Fiesta, especially around the bendy lanes I live near.

I was considering a old shape Type R Civic, so I'll look into that again. I'll try and test drive both first.

Thanks again!

Oh, also, I'm with Direct Line currently for insurance. I'm 25 years old and (for some reason) paying more this year than I did last year on my premium despite no accidents/penalties. I've got 3 years no claims. Any advice on who to go with? I did look at Adrian Flux but wasn't entirely sure whether it was a good choice.

Thanks!

Mk IV Golf GTI?

Also try Admiral for insurance, I'm with them and they seem to be the cheapest for younger drivers.

As George said Admiral are pretty good on price at the moment. Most people have seen a rise this year compared to last. I've personally found Flux to be useless for me and pretty disinterested/ unknowledgeable on the phone, which wasn't what I expected from a 'specialist'.

I've spent hours if not days phoning around and for the last few years, the cheapest quote has always come via confused.com for me.

Re the mk 5 Golf, they are nice cars however visually don't have much impact imo and are expensive compared to the opposition.

OP, other suggestions you could consider are an e46 330ci (very happy with my recently purchased one) or perhaps a Z4 3.0, seen some below £9k which are seriously tempting.

Hi, I've continued to do some research and a Z4 seems seriously tempting. Would there be much difference in running costs between the 2.5 and 3.0 litre versions?
